Responsible tourism
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Take a quick train journey out of Kyoto to Lake Biwa, a UNESCO wetland site which is a crucial habitat for fish and birds. Experience the Japanese agricultural lifestyle as you pedal your electric bike along beautiful lakeside tracks, through ancient villages, and past the rice fields, to meet the people who farm this landscape.
In order to truly contribute towards a healthier planet, we believe in putting our efforts into travelling responsibly and donating towards conservation projects. This is why we’ve put together the Selective Earth Programme, which offers all our clients the opportunity to contribute towards conservation projects in Asia. We have teamed up with the World Land Trust (WLT) – an international conservation charity who actively conserve Asia’s rainforest whilst supporting local communities. We work closely with the trust to identify which projects are a priority for funding, to ensure our donations keep on making a difference. We are currently contributing towards the conservation of the Khe Nuoc Trong forest, in Vietnam, as well as planting fruit trees in the surrounding communities.
The Impacts of this Trip
Our holidays are designed to enable our clients to immerse themselves in local places and experiences and we make sure that, wherever possible, the income they bring to a destination goes back into the community. In this Japan itinerary you will have the rare opportunity to visit a Biwan family, learn about their lifestyle and enjoy a home-cooked lunch. In addition, we've partnered with a Tokyo language school to offer a unique, personal insight into Tokyo life. Instead of going on an average guided tour, you'll have a few hours of cultural exchange with a genuine local - a Japanese student who's learning English.
This tailormade itinerary is based on private travel in Japan, not in a large group. By travelling in this way we have minimal disruptive impact on the environment and communities visited and are able to stay in smaller, locally owned properties, where possible, that are not suitable for larger coach tours.
One of our core values is to collaborate with local, responsible companies and partners who share our focus, beliefs and passions. An ongoing exchange of information guarantees that we can all continue to improve our work around responsible tourism.
