Description of South Africa family holiday, Cape Town and safari

Looking for an easy South Africa safari holiday to enjoy with kids of all ages? You just found it.

Spend three days at the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, close to the famous Kruger National Park, before another four days in exciting Cape Town with a host of optional activities and attractions that will appeal to all the family.

Let’s start with Karongwe. You’ll be staying in a stylish ecolodge with its own swimming pool. Your days can be spent on 4x4 game drives out to see the reserve’s residents, including the iconic Big Five and many species of birdlife; on walking safaris, or visiting a nearby tribal village to learn about fascinating ways of life here. During the hot part of the day your accommodation includes a fun kids’ club, or you can just relax on your private deck. Spacious family suites are available. There is also a babysitting service so that parents can kick back a little in the evenings – always a bonus!

Next you’ll fly on to Cape Town, taking about 2.5 hours, where you’ll be met and transferred to your accommodation. The next four days are at your liberty. Make the most of your luxurious, sustainable hotel’s amenities including a lap pool, spa and fitness centre (as well as incredible city or Table Mountain views from your suite), or explore the city.

Company Gardens, Iziko South African Museum and the Planetarium are all within easy walking distance. Alternatively you might choose to see the famous Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned, take the fun cable car up Table Mountain, or hire a car to explore the Winelands and the wildlife of the Cape Peninsula. It’s entirely up to you.

This eight-day safari holiday in South Africa is designed with families in mind. Take game drives with engaging, expert guides able to bring the landscape and animal behaviours to life, stay in sustainable accommodations that minimise your trip’s carbon footprint, and know that while you’re creating magical family memories, your holiday is also giving back to the community and environment of South Africa, because you’re travelling with a responsible operator.

Note: minimum age for game drives is 6

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Karongwe mostly only uses borehole water. The lodge has been carefully built around pre-existing trees to secure as small a footprint as possible. Overall, the Karongwe Portfolio meets the sustainable tourism expectations of the most discerning of ecotourists.

Taj Cape Town: They are a part of the EarchCheck programme - the world’s most credible environmental benchmarking and certification programme for the travel and tourism industry. Taj hotels globally have also agreed to eradicate single use plastic. As a relatively new hotel, the building has been in a very economical fashion with regards to water and energy. In addition, a waste disposal company recycles all recyclable waste from the hotel.

We always suggest when practicing green methods at home, to use the same practices on the trip.

While in Cape Town we suggest you walk to the many activities across the road and in the surrounding area, this will assist in eliminating the amount of carbon emissions.

While on your safari, do not use plastic bottled water on the safari vehicle, rather bring an aluminium water bottle that you can re-use and re-fill.

Also re-use your towels in both properties, this can help save up to 40% of the hotel's total hot water consumption.

Before you fly, we suggest you do not print tickets if you can use electronic tickets. Either save those documents to your mobile devices or download them onto your phone.

The wildlife at Karongwe is known for it's Big Five including great leopard sightings, birding, African Wild Dog, Cheetah, spotted Brown Hyena. To support wildlife when booking this trip, you leave your positive footprint behind. In support of wildlife and the environment, we have partnered with the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre to actively contribute to the cause of cheetah conservation by donating 1% of each booking value to HESC to ensure that everyone who travels on this trip leaves a positive impact on Africa. Based in South Africa, the organization is actively involved in researching, breeding and anti-poaching initiatives as well as passing on their knowledge on conservation to the general public.

We run a paperless office and have 3 recycling bins too. This especially works with printed guide books, we dispose of them in the appropriate recycle bin if they are outdated.

Our clients are provided with eco-friendly tote bags as gifts, this will help you reuse it. The bags are products made from recycled or biodegradable materials. The company we have sourced them from follows the same environmental sustainability for the benefits of local families too. You can use the eco-friendly bag when you travel.

The Impacts of this Trip

Karongwe River Lodge: focuses on the local community as they are involved with local schools and an orphanage. They also run hospitality training programs for unemployed adults in the area. They employ 280 staff mainly from the community. Several of the local village learners have been given bursaries to study at Varsity. Community staff are also trained at the Karongwe Portfolio Spa. Most of the rangers and trackers are local Shangaan so you will also be able to learn about culture and tradition.

Always eat in locally owned restaurants that buy local, we will provide you with a Cape Town guide that includes our recommended list of local restaurants.

To buy local we suggest visiting the many markets which is one road away from Taj Cape Town including Adderley Square and Greenmarket Square, thereby you will be supporting local businesses. You are then aiding in the survival of the local people and culture. You will also be provided with a Cape Town guide which has a list of other local markets, flea markets or shopping areas we suggest.

We always seek opportunities that give back to the communities you visit.

We currently employ 9 local staff in our reservations office plus all our suppliers including hotels, lodges, tours and transfer company we use are citizens of the country in which you are travelling. We also support content creators too.
