Responsible tourism

Lima to Rio tour in South America

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Meals - In each location visited, the tour leader will encourage customers to shop at local markets and restaurants, consuming food that is local to that destination or country when possible. This ensures that we are not supporting big brand food names who are imported into the country and thus have a higher carbon footprint.

This tour visits the remote region of Uyuni in Bolivia, which has limited resources when it comes to heating and electricity. For this section, we use basic, multi-share hostels that carefully limit their resources and take care to output as little emissions as possible. On top of this, these hostels are always family owned and run.

In many locations, such as Lima, Cusco, Santiago, Buenos Aires and Rio, our accommodation is centrally located and in walking distance to many of the popular sites. This alleviates the need for taking transport and encourages customers to walk in the cities. Tour leaders will always conduct a local orientation tour of the hotels surrounding so that customers can find their bearings and feel comfortable exploring the area by foot.

Environment

On this tour we predominantly stay in locally-owned and managed hotels and guesthouses that are chosen for their local character and ambience. We visit the Uyuni Salt Flats and Laguna Colorada. These locations are very remote with limited resources and any electricity or heating uses a generator. We stay in hostels here, run by local families and only use minimal resources. We encourage our clients to pack warm clothes and layers when visiting these areas on our tours.

This tour visits the incredible Iguazu Falls with an included excursion to both of the Argentina and Brazil sides. The park contains portions of the Interior Atlantic Forest and is managed by both countries. It is a protected area with over 240,000 hectares. Over 50 species of mammals and 240 species of birds live here, many of which are endangered. Our entry fees go towards the protection of the park and its wildlife. Whist in Foz do Iguacu in Brazil, there is also the option to visit the bird park. It is the only institution in the world focused on the conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest birds and funds from ticket sales go towards the conservation, research and education.

We have been operating in South America since 1987. Consequently we have developed long-standing relationships with suppliers from Lima all the way to Rio. We are highly selective of local partners, and only approach those that share our commitment to promoting responsible travel practices.

Community

On this tour we visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Whilst there, our groups will sometimes visit Awana Kancha - a family run initiative. It showcases the indigenous textile works and gives travellers the chance to interact with the local community.

In La Paz, Bolivia, our Tour Leaders will often bring our travellers to the ‘Witches Market’ on the orientation walk. This allows our clients to get an insight into indigenous traditions and customs including seeing the array of natural medicines used. Similarly, in Rio de Janeiro there is a market near Copacabana beach where locals sell their own paintings, thereby benefiting directly from the presence of travellers in the area.

We include a wine tour in Mendoza, Argentina. Here our clients will learn about the wine-growing process and how Mendoza is the number 1 wine-growing region in Latin America. It is a core part of Argentina’s culture. They will visit vineyards that have been in use since the 19th century as well sampling a traditional Argentine lunch.

Our optional excursions also encourage travellers to visit the cultural attractions of the cities that we visit on this tour. For example, we offer the chance to watch a traditional tango show in Buenos Aires, a Rafain dinner and dance show in Foz do Iguaçu and visiting some of the best museums in Cusco including the Gold Museum. The economic support of these local cultural highlights directly benefits the sights and their conservation, sustaining the cultural diversity of the region.

Travelling with respect – We believe travel should open traveller’s eyes to countries, communities and cultures from around the world. Our website has been designed to offer specialist tips, expert information and guides to provide our travellers information before they travel that will ensure they get the most from their tour. For instance - our Peru guide is packed with tips, travel advice, history and culture of Peru for travellers to read up on before embarking on this tour. Our Tour Leaders will ensure clients are respectful when travelling on their tour including recommendations like dressing appropriately when visiting places of spiritual significance, like the Catholic churches in Cusco, Santiago, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Our Local Payment, paid at day one of the tour, also ensures that part of the tour cost goes directly into the South American communities we visit.
