Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
This trip visits seven different countries and many more cities and villages. We understand it is of the utmost importance to respect the areas which we visit and leave nothing but footprints behind. Travelling in small groups of an average of 8 - 14, and never more than 19 people, is one of the ways in which we ensure we have minimal impact and disruption to the places that we visit.

At the start of the trip, the tour leader will run through responsible travel practises that everyone must adhere to while on tour. This includes but is not limited to: switching off electricity when not in the hotel room, requesting that the hotel does not change towels or bedding daily unless necessary, avoiding using single use plastic toiletries and avoiding the use of air-conditioning unless necessary.

Wildlife and animal protection is important to us and while Europe has much more responsible animal practises than other countries there is always room for improvement. Romania unfortunately used to use bears and bear cubs as attractions outside of restaurants and for human entertainment, and while this practise is now illegal, it left many bears in captivity and unable to fend for themselves in the wild. One of the recommended optional excursions on this trip is a visit to the Brasov Bear Sanctuary - a centre for rescued bears where they are cared for and have space outdoors to live out the remainder of their lives. In 2007, when Romania joined the European Union, the standard that zoos had to meet increased to the stage where many did not comply and were forced to shut. Many of the bears faced euthanasia, but were rescued by the sanctuary. All monies paid for entrance fees and in the shop go towards the care of the bears here.

Transport: This 20 day adventure is run mainly on local transport, including trains and buses. This is undoubtedly the most economic form of travel in the region and our small group size allows us to use normal public buses. We ensure that the vehicles are just big enough for the group, normally opting for small minivans which have less of an impact than larger coaches. Not only does this mode of travel reduce carbon emissions but it also avoids us adding to the road congestion outside the larger cities.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Friends and Neighbours: We have spent many years building strong relationships with local, trusted suppliers in each destination that we visit, ensuring that we support hard working, smaller businesses that really benefit from our business. We opt for locally owned and ideally family run accommodation where possible, with our small group size allowing us to stay in guesthouses and hotels that do not have the capacity for large tour groups.

In Romania, we employ a local guide for the day tour of the Maramures region - not only does this support local employment but also provides a wonderful, authentic learning experience for travellers.

In Eger, travellers are encouraged to visit the Valley of the Beautiful Women, a string of wine caverns where local winemakers provide tastings and sell their produce. This is one of the best places in Hungary to pick up local wine and engage with the sellers to learn about the process and history of Hungarian wine.

Travelling with Respect: Our staff, tour leaders and travellers are all passionate about embracing new cultures and travelling with respect through our destinations. We thoroughly outline this in our online responsible travel policy with tips from experts and guidelines on responsible travel. Travel does not always run smoothly and hospitality in Romania and Bulgaria can be a little slower than in Western Europe. Our tour leaders are experts in embracing the unexpected, looking on the bright side and ensuring the group experience is as good as can be. We always encourage travellers to show respect to all residents and locals they meet along the way, as well as learn a few words of the local language which can open the door to interesting conversations.

Travellers are encouraged to visit the Central Market in Budapest, a large indoor food and produce market in the city which not only offers a huge variety of local products but immerses customers in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Within Romania, we use a local supplier who provides vehicles for the Maramures day trip and visits to sites of interest where local buses do not reach.

Meals: While most breakfasts are included on this tour, all lunches and dinners at the clients own accord since we visit places with plenty of variety for different dietary requirements and budgets. Our tour leaders know the best local establishments that offer affordable and authentic meals, opting for local produce that has not been imported to the destination.
