Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

This is a tailor-made itinerary and can be customised to your liking in regards to accommodation and cultural activities. As a global tour operator we understand the importance of providing responsible and sustainable holidays to our clients and therefore only work with local suppliers to ensure the most authentic experience for you while supporting the areas which we visit.

This tailor-made holiday visits Kariega Game Reserve - a privately, family owned park with over 10,000 hectares of wilderness and space for the animals that call it home. Situated along the Garden Route, it’s a great addition to a South African holiday for travellers who wish to spot the Big Five and enjoy some pristine African wilderness. The Kariega Foundation aims to sustain and promote animal conservation and works on a number of projects including environmental education and domestic animal care. By visiting the game reserve and spreading awareness of the cause you are playing a part in the future of South Africa’s wildlife.

We work with local lodges and accommodation en route who share our responsible travel ethos and who are committed to doing their part to help. Specifically, the lodges in Kariega Game Reserve recently removed all plastic bottles from the buildings and use glass bottles in the restaurants and encourage customers to bring reusable bottles on safari.

This trip visits Tsitsikamma National Park - an area rich in lush vegetation, thick forests, deep gorges and a marine reserve. The activities in the national park all have little to no carbon footprint which makes it a great addition to this holiday. Travellers have the option to enjoy snorkelling, kayaking, hiking, swimming, climbing, mountain biking or abseiling. For those less adventurous, there are numerous easier walking trails around the reserve.

This 12 day trip focuses solely on the beautiful coastline in South Africa, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, a distance of under 800 kilometers. Staying within these boundaries and travelling slowly between each location is a much more environmentally friendly holiday than jetting between multiple countries in a tick-box fashion.

Customers are encouraged to eat local produce and shop products that are South African made when possible. We advise customers to research local products and always ask the expert guides where the best markets and shops are should you wish to purchase souvenirs. Trying to avoid internationally shipped items is another small way to lower the carbon emissions on your holiday.

The Impacts of this Trip

This itinerary includes a city tour of Cape Town where customers are taken on a journey through Cape Town’s past and present, visiting various places of interest along the way. We work with local guides who not only provide the most authentic tours and can give first hand stories about South Africa - but working with guides from the area also supports local employment. In relation to this, we ensure that the lodges and hotels we use share the same values as ourselves and employ local workers under a fair living wage with appropriate training.

Travelling with Respect: We want to ensure that travellers get the warmest welcome and do not offend local cultures while on holiday in South Africa. We therefore have an in depth responsible travel policy on our website which outlines respect when in a new country and how travellers can ensure they are showcasing tourism in a positive light.

All aspects of this tailor-made holiday are done using only South African suppliers - from the accommodation, transport, activities and more. We work closely with local guides as well as suppliers who we can ensure provide the best experiences for our clients while offering an authentic holiday. We have built strong relationships with these suppliers over the years and are proud to continue supporting them.
