Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
This thorough tour of the wonders that Southeast Asia has to offer takes travellers through sites of immense cultural significance and natural beauty. It is therefore of utmost importance to us that the environment be at the forefront of travellers’ consideration when they visit these locations, as well as all others. We ensure that all of our tours consist of no more than 17 people, preventing overcrowding in popular tourist destinations and allowing for the group to explore local businesses such as eateries and markets without causing any disruption.

Where possible, we try to lower our carbon footprint while on tour. Our accommodation in urban areas is always located within walking distance of the main sights, encouraging travellers to walk rather than use transport when exploring cities. While in Sukhothai, we include a bike tour around the ruins. Not only is this a fantastic experience, but it also carries a low carbon footprint. There are many places on this tour that are perfect for renting a bike to explore and our tour leaders will always recommend this option over other day trips. We will also always encourage travellers to eat local - not only does this provide the most authentic experience but eliminates much of the carbon footprint that comes with international produce.

We always encourage those travelling with us to reduce their water and electricity use when on any of our tours. Simple steps such as turning off appliances when they aren't being used or not leaving the tap running whilst brushing your teeth may seem insignificant but in the grand scheme of things could make all the difference. We are aware that Southeast Asia does not have the best recycling and waste schemes, therefore we encourage all travellers to think about this ahead of time through our responsible travel documents which can be found online. Tips include bringing your own cloth bag to avoid accepting plastic bags, bringing a reusable water bottle which can be filled up using hotel filters where possible and bringing your own shower bars to avoid using hotel single use plastic. Our company firmly believes in travelling responsibly and instills the environmentally conscious advice of reducing, reusing and recycling waste wherever feasible. This ideology is instilled throughout the company, from our head office in London to our tour leaders operating across the globe.

Animal tourism - Unfortunately the low standard of animal care and the level of exploitation of animals in Asia is much higher than other places in the world. We are fundamentally against any form of animal exploitation for human entertainment and strongly advise our customers to avoid zoos in the locations on this tour as well as animal parks or “sanctuaries” that allows riding on wild animals.

The Impacts of this Trip

Meals and accommodation - Where possible, we opt for smaller, locally run hotels and guesthouses. Our aim with this is to provide income for smaller establishments that do not have the capacity for large groups and therefore rely on small group tours and individual travellers. As well as staying in locally run accommodation, our tour guides also encourage using local businesses, whether they be markets, eateries or bars, avoiding the encouragement of global chains and encouraging smaller, more traditional establishments. This trip includes most breakfasts however lunch and dinner is at the travellers own cost - providing plenty of opportunities for customers to spend their money in the establishments of their choice. This trip visits various destinations that have particularly good street food created by local vendors, including Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Hoi An, Hanoi and Chiang Mai. Our tour leaders have knowledge on the best markets for an authentic meal and will always encourage travellers to try new cuisines.

Since only breakfasts are included on this trip, customers have the flexibility to enjoy a range of restaurants for other meals. While in Hanoi, our tour leaders encourage our customers to eat at Koto Restaurant - an establishment which trains disadvantaged youth and aims to end the cycle of poverty. We also support a similar organisation in Hoi An - the Blue Dragon Restaurant. The restaurant is staffed by ex-street children and the owner works towards education, health and food programs for street children and orphans in the area.

While in Vientiane this tour visits the COPE centre to learn about the problem Laos is now facing with many unexploded devices which remain after the Vietnam War. COPE works to provide services and assistance to those who have been affected or left disabled by this and the centre is important in the wider education of the issue. The money spent or donated at the centre is used to purchase prosthetic and other mobility related devices to improve the lives of the many people living with disabilities.
