Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
Travelling responsibly is something that we strongly believe in adhering to when touring the globe. We promote an ideology of utmost respect towards the environment for those joining us on our tours. Travelling in smaller groups means a lack of potentially damaging over-tourism in certain regions, as well as presenting a better opportunity to explore local establishments as a group, without causing any nuisance. Between Sukhothai and Bangkok we take a local train, which is not only the most environmentally friendly way to travel between the two destinations but is a wonderful experience in itself.

We actively encourage all who travel with us to respect the environment throughout all of our tours, even through minor acts such as refraining from leaving electronics on unnecessarily or saving water wherever possible. We also vehemently request that those travelling with us refrain from partaking in anything that could prove detrimental to the environment, such as removing articles from their rightful place or conversely leaving anything where one shouldn’t.

We oppose littering of any description during our tours and encourage travellers to partake in our reduce, reuse, recycle initiative. Reducing waste wherever possible and disposing of it correctly and responsibly when it is not possible to do so. Unfortunately, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand have quite severe litter problems within the large cities, largely due to a lack of proper recycling systems and lack of education on waste. We want to ensure that our customers never contribute to this, advising them to carry litter with them until there are bins available. We also encourage customers to carry a reusable water bottle with them. While tap water is not safe to drink throughout Southeast Asia many restaurants and hotels do have water filtration systems where you can refill.

Our head office in the UK also follows a scrupulous set of rules in order to benefit the environment in any way possible, no matter how small. Reducing water usage, recycling wherever possible and only using paper when there is no alternative available are just some of the practices we follow in order to keep our office’s carbon footprint to an absolute minimum.

The Impacts of this Trip

We dissuade all who travel on our tours from using global chains, whether it be in the accommodation that those travelling with us stay in, the restaurants that they eat in or the vendors from whom they buy local wears. This ensures that money goes back into the local economy, to those who require it most. Not only that, but it also provides travellers with the bonus of a more authentically cultural experience. When possible, we like to support local restaurants that are also working towards helping their own people. One such establishment that does this is the Blue Dragon Restaurant in Hoi An, where the owner provides education and training to street children and orphans with the aim of getting them into work and ending the cycle of poverty.

While in Vientiane this tour visits the COPE centre to learn about the problem Laos is now facing with many unexploded devices which remain after the Vietnam War. COPE work to provide services and assistance to those who have been affected or left disabled by this. Many people are unaware of the lasting effect that the war has had on neighbouring countries and we aim to educate and spread awareness of the ongoing issues faced by the local community.

In terms of eateries and markets, the vast local knowledge possessed by our tour leaders helps those touring with us to experience the lesser known local haunts and more untouched sectors of each and every location that we visit. Our tour leaders’ expertise also allows for a greater depth of interaction with residents in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, so that a broader appreciation of the cultures can be shared by the group.

Finally, we implement a strict conduct on travelling with respect. We ask that all customers embrace the new cultures and communities they are travelling to, be patient and understand that each country has a unique way of operating and this may not be in line with what you are used to back home. We ask that travellers engage with the local residents when possible, even by learning a few words of the local language. It's important that we show tourism in a positive light and respect all cultures and people that we come across.
