PlanetTravel has the power to transform not only the traveler but also our world. This belief forms the foundation of our business. We have a deep commitment to protecting and preserving the destinations we visit and building a better world through sustainable travel.
We operate on a completely paperless basis when communicating with clients and our contacts on the ground, recycle all plastic bottles from the tours. We give clients reusable canvas totes for their journey to Ethiopia. These are used to cut down on the amount of plastic bags used for shopping and souvenirs.
For our tours to Ethiopia, we reserve a portion of the tours to support the World Resources Institute. WRIís mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect Earthís environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations. In Ethiopia, WRI engages in sustainable urbanization, climate policy and analysis, forest restoration and access to information issues.
We encourage travelers to reduce waste and consumption wherever possible. Limiting water usage by actions like taking shorter showers and declining bedding changes, for example, can be very beneficial, specifically in the destinations in the northern part of the country.
Tour guides in Ethiopia teach the travellers to stay on the paths and keep a safe distance from the wildlife, as to not disturb the local flora and fauna.
There are several tours and activities done through walking or trekking on this itinerary. These are carbon-neutral activities and a great way to see the sites in a more intimate way.
PeopleWe start by focusing our tours during the off season and shoulder seasons in Ethiopia, which creates economic stability in the tourism sector. By booking directly through our local partners at Pagumen, utilizing local guides, encouraging clients to buy local souvenirs, and staying at locally owned & operated lodges, not only do our travelers have better experiences but as much money as possible stays within Ethiopia.
To date, 90.31% of the full cost of all tours booked with us has gone directly back into the local economies.
We reserve 5% of our clientsí total package cost to invest in the local communities and environment through our partnering 501(c)(3) Second Look Worldwide. These investments are tangible projects which our clients can see during their trip. All projects are determined by the communities and dependent on their most direct needs, however, we are focusing on projects that support water management solutions. In Ethiopia, we will be working in the Simien region of the country to support water management practices.
Clients on this tour to Ethiopia will be able to see the vibrancy of the Ethiopian food and culture, both past and present, and be able to see and interact with locals throughout the tour. Within the southern region of the country, the visited tribal communities are chosen specifically with the locals in mind. We focus on taking clients to tribes that are authentically maintaining their livelihoods without a high level of tourist influence.
We encourage travelers to purchase locally produced goods and utilizing local services such as souvenirs, crafts, meals, guides, and establishments. These all can enhance the traveler experience and have a positive impact in Ethiopia. Entrance fees to Simien National Park and the historic sites of Gondor, Lalibela, and Axum go toward the preservation and conservation. This ensures that local residents working at these sites can sustain their jobs through proper management of these tourism products.
We provide accurate pre-trip information concerning Ethiopia, including the social and political situation and require all travelers to respect the local customs and traditions of Ethiopia. Being mindful of our actions abroad always results in a better experience while traveling.
