Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
During this extensive trip there will be amazing safari opportunities in three countries. We have taken care to ensure we are game-watching in the most responsible way. They take time to advise customers about looking after the environments they are exploring because it's the wonderful wildlife and diverse landscapes that attracts future customers and creates sustainable incomes for the local people. All our groups are advised to keep a safe and fair distance between themselves and wildlife, and to not pick any flowers. In many parks flora is also protected much like wildlife, so leaders will educate groups about what they can see and the importance of sticking to footpaths, not leaving litter and having minimal impact.

In Zimbabwe we include a visit to the Painted Dog Conservation Centre. One of the most endangered species on the African continent, with an estimated 7,000 left in the wild, painted dogs are native to the African continent and cannot be found anywhere else. The centre works to educate the local community on how to protect the dogs and the importance of doing so, to ensure the population can thrive into the future. The centre also treats injured dogs and returns them to the wild as soon as they are able. Through visiting this project, we are raising awareness of this increasing problem and sharing the story of the team working to protect them.

On this trip we offer both an accommodated and a camping version, and the teams work hard to ensure minimal negative impact along the route. All campsites will be totally cleared of litter before departure and camping areas will be left as they were found. Many picnic lunches happen during this itinerary, all produce is bought along the way from local stores and fresh producers where possible and all rubbish is collected and disposed of appropriately.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Our drivers and leaders know this itinerary very well as they run it repeatedly with the main aim to always be welcomed back.

We use trusted and experienced guides who understand the importance of protecting the wildlife, the lodges we use employ their staff locally, training them in hospitality and ensuring money goes back into the surrounding communities. We also invest in training all our tour leaders, either at our UK headquarters or in country.

Our chosen lodge in Botswana supports the local community by buying their fresh produce for the restaurant meals in the nearby village markets of Shakawe. Elsewhere we use local restaurants where ever we can as we believe our guests get a better experience and it keeps money locally.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
