Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

During our visits on the tour, we do a lot of our local visits on foot, and in Cartagena, we travel by bicycle, allowing us to experience the sites and sounds of Colombia, whilst protecting the environment from excess transport.

Whist in the Cocora Valley, we spend time at the Acaime Nature Reserve, which is the home of up to 15 species of hummingbirds. Our Tour Leader guides the group through the area to ensure the birds aren't disturbed in their natural habitat. Many birds are tolerant of humans around their nests, but we should be avoiding them to ensure they are safe and secure in their natural environments.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

The Impacts of this Trip

Throughout the tour, we use a local Colombian Tour Leader, who has extensive knowledge of the country and always happy to share their experiences growing up in Colombia. Whilst in Bogota, we take a graffiti tour, on foot, to experience the urban art scene, which was set up to expose local artists, and we have one of the local artists accompanying us to explain the graffiti scenes.

Coffee is extremely important for Colombia, and whilst in Armenia, we stay and visit one of the many working coffee farms. We spend time with local people, who explain the full process of extensive picking, roasting and selling of the coffee.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
