Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
This trip offers you the chance to trek the fabulous Inca Trail in a small group. In recent years there have been increasing regulations on the Trail aimed at preserving this fragile, world renowned Heritage Site. Our groups are briefed on the park regulations before the trek starts and the trek leader will ensure that we stick to the rules including sticking to the path, not picking native flowers and taking out all our litter.

On the trek we have looked at our impacts on every level - from using eco-friendly toilets and biodegradable soap to establishing a relationship with the community of our porters. Aside from ensuring a fair deal for our local team of porters, we work closely with Inca Porter Project in Cusco who are involved in educational projects for people of this remote region.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

The Impacts of this Trip

On day four of the trip we trek to the villages of Misminay and Anccoto where the porters are based. The money generated during our stay is used to support the families, including vaccination campaigns and have helped to fund a nursery school and community hall, funds are also being used to build additional rooms in other households and helps further build community engagement.

Local operators run our optional excursions, ensuring that the money goes directly to the supplier and the community. When we stay in the the sacred valley before the trail we purchase the vegetables directly from local farms, offering the community an additional source of revenue and allowing guests the chance to taste locally produced food.

The tour is led by a local tour leader who is also the trek guide on the trail. The trek guide is supported by the assistant trek guide and our great team of porters and we abide by the strict Inca Trail guidelines that regulate their working conditions, the care of the Trail and the surrounding communities. We stay in locally owned hotels in Cusco, ensuring that more of your money goes into the local economy.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
