Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
When travelling around Sri Lanka we keep the size of the coach to a minimum, so rather than using gas guzzling 40-50 seaters we opt for more environmental friendly 15-25 seat coaches that use less fuel and therefore emit less carbon. In addition to this, when heading up to Jaffna we take the local train which, apart from being an environmentally way to travel, is a real local experience.

Running safari drives in the quieter Wilpattu National Park provides an environmentally conscious experience for both you and the unique animals we witness, which include the Sri Lankan leopard and elephants. The likes of Yala National Park allow 200 vehicles per half day, whereas Wilpattu allows just 30 – 40. Going hand-in-hand with this, our local partner in Sri Lanka provides extensive training to the drivers so they understand their role to preserve the environment.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Arranging and suggesting meals in locally-owned and run restaurants not only provides you with a chance to enjoy true Sri Lankan cuisine and hospitality, but it also means your money supports the local community and ensures they have a continued livelihood.

Our local partner is staffed by only Sri Lankans who know their country incredibly well. In addition to this, the hotels we stay in are also staffed by at least 70% locals. This provides experience and learning within the tourism industry as well as a way to improve foreign language skills keeping vital jobs within the community.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
