As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetOn this trip during your free time our tour leaders will encourage you to visit the DEKAMER Turtle Rehabilitation Centre near Dalyan to learn about the lifecycle of the turtles and also their conservation efforts. There is the chance to donate to their conservation and rehabilitation work.
The owner of our local agent has an in-depth knowledge of Turkish wild flowers and they were aware of the existence of locally endemic plants that are on the critically endangered list and they used this knowledge in a successful court case against the development of a new motorway and airport development in the Lycia area which would have harmed this habitat.
When shopping for the included group picnics our local tour leaders purchase non-packaged food from the local market and they use reusable bags for the shopping. No single use plastics are used for serving or as cutlery.
Our local agent provides filtered water on all minibuses and encourages customers to refill from springs or other suitable sources. Our local agent also encourages the hotels we work with to supply free water from safe sources to our customers rather than selling water in single use plastic bottles.
Our transport suppliers are all local companies and we use minibuses rather than bigger less fuel efficient vehicles. The boats used on the rivers have propeller guards to protect the turtles and other marine life.
Our local agent in their office recycle batteries and their staff are subsidised if they walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
PeopleFor the majority of nights on this trip we stay in the town of Kas and our tour leaders provide customers with a map of bars, restaurants and shops with details of the best local dishes to try and all of these recommended places are run by local families.
During the winter months every Sunday, our local agent organises guided treks for local people to join, just for cost price. They are also involved in the maintenance and marking of the Lycian Way long distance footpath, and support the Culture Routes Association who develop and management of trekking routes in Turkey. They also provide sporting equipment for local events like bike rides and kayak races for use by the local community.
Our local agent employs about 10 staff directly and they provide all the training that they need and first aid qualifications free of charge. All our tour leaders at Explore are trained on the importance of responsible tourism.
All the trips we run with this local agent are developed to show the finest of the culture and nature of the country in as lower impact manner as possible. Our tour leaders never take the groups to 'tourist trap' shops or condone commission based sales. Our tour leaders give informal talks about cultural or personal topics to add value to the trip and give insight into their lives. They also ensure that our customers are aware of the cultural norms that should be observed, dress code, gestures, etc.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
