Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Bolivia is a startling country of massive landscapes and ancient cities that look like they've stepped straight out of the past - our trip passes through some of the best UNESCO-listed and protected areas in the country: Amboro National Park, El Fuerte archaeological site, Sucre and Potosi cities, the ruins of Tiahuanaco, and even taking in some of the Chapaq Nan - the UNESCO Heritage ancient Inca road that spans six countries from Argentina to Colombia. In many of these places, our visit contributes to the continuing upkeep and maintenance of these sites, ensuring their longevity for future generations.

Within these sites, our local Tour Leader and knowledgeable guides are trained to understand best practice in wildlife and nature protection. They will brief customers to keep all waste with them until back in the town, to walk only on designated paths and not to disturb the fragile natural environments. Bolivia is a large country with unreliable roads and transport networks - unfortunately this does mean that we use two domestic flights during the trip. However, we are trying to reduce other carbon emissions as much as possible by using low carbon methods of travel such as boat journeys at Lake Titicaca, on-foot exploration in all the cities and national parks like Amboro, and even a cable car journey in La Paz which is a much more exciting way to descend into the city.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

The Impacts of this Trip

As part of this trip, we have the opportunity to take a city tour with a difference. Our supplier in Bolivia is partnered with a collective of local shoe-shiners, who take visitors through the local, more residential neighbourhoods and markets of La Paz, including the popular 'Belen dining room' where rows of food stalls sell lunches very cheaply to the working population in the area. This is a chance to learn more about one of La Paz's most thriving working communities, which is also one of the most misunderstood.

Throughout Bolivia we try wherever possible to use small locally-owned hotels that reflect the character of the place. We work in partnership with our local in-country ground agents to introduce environmental policies which help to conserve water usage and energy expenditure. For example, on the Isla del Sol we stay at the Ecolodge La Estancia - this self-sufficient lodge uses solar panels to produce electricity, grow their own vegetables to stock the restaurant and is almost entirely staffed by people from the island's indigenous communities.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
