Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

The Cape Verde islands have become one of the global leaders in renewable energy, working towards generating at least 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020. Electricity and water can be scarce at times, so our local guides explain about the importance of using these commodities responsibly so that the islands are not under too much strain and risk having their sources temporarily shut off, which can occasionally happen.

For all customers who book an African tour, we advertise and encourage use of a Water-To-Go carbon filtered water bottle so you can drink the tap water which reduces the risk of getting ill by 85%. This dramatically reduces the number of single use plastic bottles.

Our local partner has a “Code of Conduct” which promotes creating “unforgettable experiences to the tourists, committed with responsible tourism, integrating local communities, protecting the environment and respecting the cultural, moral and social values of our community”. They teach these core values to their staff, by giving clear guidelines on how to conduct tours with minimal harm or disruption to the local flora and fauna.

We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in the national parks, archaeological sites, monuments and other sensitive areas; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our guides are trained to promote this message in Africa.

As the focus of this trip is walking, we aim to leave a minimal impact on the areas as possible. This trip actively encourages customers to reduce the carbon footprint to a minimum. This includes not deviating from designated walking areas so as not to upset ecosystems irrespective of the size. We encourage customers not to feed birds or other wildlife as they become reliant on tourists.

The Impacts of this Trip

Cape Verde’s economy has been turned around in the last few years. The islands have invested in sustainable tourism projects and this has revitalised the previously fragile economy. Tourism, the main driver for economic growth, has successfully tapped into natural resources such as biodiversity, landscape and the environment. Our local partner has played a part in this development and ensures that increased visitors does not impact poorly not only on the environment but the local communities. They have many initiatives to allow them to do this, and one example of this is how they educate their staff about moral, social and cultural values, which they say are vital to put into practice when visiting or passing through local communities.

We work with local operators who share our commitment to responsible travel where possible. They take pride in employing and training only locals, to ensure money ends up in the hands of the guiding community.

We try to eat out in locally run restaurants where possible, to support the local communities.
