Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
UNESCO Sites: This cultural and small group tour visits some of the most beautiful corners of Sri Lanka - showcasing the fantastic natural beauty and historical sites that can be found in the country. Sri Lanka is home to six cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Ancient City of Sigiriya, Old Town of Galle, Dambulla Cave Temple, Sacred City of Anuradhapura and the Sacred City of Kandy. All of the above are visited on this group tour. We believe that by bringing customers to these historical locations and educating them on the rich history we will bring awareness to the importance of preservation and keeping these sites alive for generations to come. The entrance fees we pay contribute to the safeguarding of these areas and preservation efforts. This trip also spends time in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rolling hillsides and tea plantations create the most beautiful landscape. While travelling through countryside such as this, we implement strict environmental welfare policies, such as no littering, disposing of any waste correctly and responsibly, avoiding unnecessary damage to local flora and essentially leaving the area as we found it. Our very ethos is to experience the best of a destination without compromising the regions which we travel through.

Group Size: The maximum group size on this tour is 16 people. We believe that small group tours have a lesser impact on the environments that we traverse and ensure that we cause minimum disruption wherever we go.

Transport: This tour uses small minivans for the majority of the trip. We ensure that we use transport that comfortably fits the group yet does not have unnecessary excess space. For this reason we do not use large buses or coaches. A train is used for the journey between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, which not only is an environmentally friendly way to travel but also provides a wonderfully authentic experience.

Meals: Only breakfasts are included on this tour - lunches and dinners are at the customer's own cost. Our tour leaders have great knowledge on the best places to eat and which foods should be sampled while in Sri Lanka, and always make sure that these are locally produced dishes that are not important from far away. Eating local produce is important in not only supporting local farmers and producers, but ensuring that the food carries a low carbon footprint and does not contribute to unnecessary transport emissions.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

A large part of our ethos is travelling with respect, educating the traveller and embracing different cultures around the world. As well as in-depth policies online that outline how customers can have a positive impact on the communities that we visit, our tour leaders are passionate about sharing their destinations and educating travellers along the way. This tour uses local tour leaders to guide you through Sri Lanka. Not only does this provide the best first-hand knowledge on Sri Lanka and the locations visited, but it supports local employment too.

This tour includes a visit to a local fish market in Negombo, immersing the group in the local way of life. Also included is a cultural dance show in Kandy, which provides a unique insight into the traditions and customs of the local communities.

Meals: As previously mentioned, only breakfasts are included on this tour. This gives customers the ultimate flexibility to choose where to eat for lunches and dinners in each location. Our tour leaders will always promote eating in locally owned, smaller establishments where the money matters more than to a large international chain. Eating locally not only supports the economy, but the food is generally a lot more delicious and authentic.

In Unawatuna we visit the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, an ethical sanctuary that aims to rehabilitate orphaned elephants and does not allow them to be ridden. Instead the focus here is really on the elephant's well-being. The money from this goes directly back to the organisation.
