Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
This two week adventure tour visits some of the most beautiful landscapes and environments that exist within Peru, such as Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa and the famous Nazca lines. It is paramount that we do what we can to protect these areas for future generations and that is why we have an in depth environmental welfare policy which is available for all customers. The entrance fee to Machu Picchu goes back into the sites restoration and protection.

This tour includes the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, where we camp for three nights. First and foremost, camping is possibly the most environmentally friendly accommodation option out there - you pitch your tent and no electricity or other resources are used. On top of this, the experience of camping up in the Andes is something you will never forget. Naturally, walking to reach your destination has no carbon footprint and so the Inca Trail is a very environmentally friendly excursion. While on the trail, we ensure that no rubbish or litter is left behind, flora and fauna is not disturbed and nothing but footprints is left behind.

Wildlife - This tour includes a visit to the Ballestas Islands which are home to various birds and mammals. These islands are part of the Paracas Wildlife Reserve. To protect both the wildlife and the fragile environment we do not land on the Islands, instead admiring the wildlife from the boat. This does not detract from your enjoyment of this amazing site however, as the Islands are teeming with over 150 species of birds including Humboldt Penguins, Red-legged Cormorants, Pervian Boobies and Peruvian Pelicans. Depending on the season, you can also spot sea lions, dolphins and turtles. Whilst very little flora grows on the Islands, the waters are home to over 300 different types of algae which in turn attract huge colonies of fish. It is these colonies that in turn attract the birds and animals.

Group Size - The maximum group size on this tour is 19 people, meaning we can use smaller accommodation and have minimum impact when visiting busy sights such as Machu Picchu and Colca Canyon.

All customers are encouraged to act responsibly when staying in hotels in guesthouses, including ensuring all electricity and lights are switched off when not needed, air con is not left on, towels and bedding are not replaced unless necessary and water consumption is kept to a minimum.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Community and contributing to the economies which we visit is always at the forefront of what we do. This is why we always ask travellers to think about the consequences of where they buy from, who they are supporting and the impact they are having during their holiday. Another large part of our ethos is travelling with respect, educating the traveller and embracing different cultures around the world. As well as in-depth policies online that outline how customers can have a positive impact on the communities that we visit, our tour leaders are passionate about sharing their destinations and educating travellers along the way. This tour uses a local Peruvian tour leader to guide you through each location, which provides the best first-hand knowledge on the locations visited and in turn supports local employment.

We have developed a policy on porters in Peru, pledging that all porters hired on the Inca Trail will have the same meals as clients hiking the trail; they will have access to tents; should they fall sick while hiking they will be evacuated; all gear must be weighed prior to trekking to ensure it is not too heavy; and an enforced weight limit of 5kg for each passenger is set. We also include the tip for the porters in our tour cost to ensure that all porters are rewarded equally and fairly for their services.

This tour includes a guided tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. During the excursion we visit a traditional Peruvian market where customers have the opportunity to purchase local handicrafts and souvenirs to further support the communities who live here. On top of this, we include a day trip to visit the communities who live on Tequile on Lake Titicaca - an island that is well known for its tradition of intricate textiles and clothing knitted by the male locals, we encourage our travellers to buy some of their the high-quality handicrafts to help support this important part of their cultural heritage and livelihood.

Travelling with Respect – On our website’s responsible travel pages we provide a list of tips on creating good relationships between our travellers and the local communities that we visit on our tours. For example, for this tour we would recommend that clients learn some Spanish to try and connect with the local people, and we would advise researching the history, religion and local traditions of Peru to help them appreciate the architecture and culture of those countries and thereby get the most from their trip while respecting local customs.
