Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
The Galapagos was the first natural site to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979. It is one of the most protected natural sites in the world and is home to an abundance of endemic marine and land animals that make it perfect for wildlife enthusiasts. We understand the importance of protecting the Galapagos and having as little of an impact as possible on the creatures that call in home. This is why we only use local suppliers who share our ethos and operate in a responsible manner while on the islands. This includes having conservation certificates and complying with all national and international regulations. On top of this, the boats use ultraviolet purification systems to provide safe drinking water onboard. This means we are able to avoid using single-use plastic bottles. Additionally staff advise customers to take shorter showers and avoid requesting new towels unless deemed necessary. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided in dispensers instead of single-use toiletries.

Waste and recycling - The Galapagos boats have containers for organic waste, plastic, paper and even batteries. These can be found at reception and we ask that all customers make use of this in order to help with the recycling efforts.

During our time in the Amazon Jungle we stay in eco-lodges in the depths of the rainforest. The lodges are designed with nature in mind - using indigenous materials that do not alarm or disrupt the local wildlife. All rooms have private bathrooms however hot water is limited in order to preserve local resources. For this reason electricity is also limited and oil lamps are used as guidance along the walkways in the evenings. The lodge does have water filters and so we recommend customers bring their own reusable water bottle. In summary, the lodge works hard on sustainability and we are happy to continue supporting these efforts by bringing customers here.

Wildlife - We have a strict animal welfare policy which outlines tips for visiting wildlife dense areas but avoiding causing harm or distress to the animals. Once on board the Galapagos Cruise the naturalist guide will outline rules for visiting islands, snorkelling and swimming in the Galapagos. This includes but is not limited to: leaving appropriate space between yourself and the animal, refraining from touching the animals and ensuring the flash is turned off on cameras. Our naturalist guides are more than passionate about conservation on the Galapagos Islands and will be happy to answer your questions in regards to this while on-board.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Community and contributing to the economies which we visit is always at the forefront of what we do. This is why we always ask travellers to think about the consequences of where they buy from, who they are supporting and the impact they are having during their holiday. Another large part of our ethos is travelling with respect, educating the traveller and embracing different cultures around the world. As well as in-depth policies online that outline how customers can have a positive impact on the communities that we visit, our tour leaders are passionate about sharing their destinations and educating travellers along the way.

Our tours in Peru use local tour leaders to show the best of their country. During your time in the Galapagos, the trip is accompanied by local naturalist guides who are passionate about sharing all aspects of the Galapagos Islands. On top of this, the Amazon Jungle excursions are accompanied by local guides who will point our flora and fauna on the guided walks. All of these things provide the most authentic experience while in these destinations while also supporting local employment.

This tour includes breakfasts, while also including lunch and dinner in the Amazon Jungle due to the remote location. When only breakfast is included in Cusco and Ollantaytambo, our tour leader will encourage customers to eat in local restaurants that support the communities which we visit.

This tour includes a guided tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. During the excursion we visit a traditional Peruvian market where customers have the opportunity to purchase local handicrafts and souvenirs to further support the communities who live here.
