Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

When planning and designing an experience we pay attention to the potential environmental impacts of the different elements:
Transport: We don't run our own group transport vehicles but combine public transport with the use of small local transport providers. For the itinerary of the Canal Art Experience this means apart from short minibus transfers between the hotel and the canal basin we'll be either walking or travelling slowly on a canal boat operated by local charity LUCS (Linlithgow Union Canal Society).

Waste minimization and energy saving: We don't keep office premises, but work from an office in our homes, where we minimise waste and plastic use as much as possible, print only what's absolutely necessary (using recycled cartridges and paper)and recycle as much as we can. for the trip we hand out reusable water bottles at the start (if guests don't bring their own) and avoid plastic packaging in snacks and picnics we provide.

Buildings and historic sites: The itinerary includes a visit to Linlithgow Palace, run by Historic Environment Scotland. Our entry fees contribute to the restoration and maintenance of sites and buildings of historic and cultural interest and guests have an opportunity to learn about the challenges they face.
Choice of tutors and guides: We select tutors and guides who share our responsible travel values and communicate them to the group. The art tutor Lesley Banks was artist in residence at Scottish Canals and knowledgeable around the issues faced by Scottish waterways.

Anna, the herbalist leading the herbalist walk and workshop, cycles everywhere or uses public transport. She has a wealth of knowledge of plants and natural remedies and is keen to share this with the group and encourage them to make their own using simple, natural ingredients.

The Impacts of this Trip

All our creative experiences support local artists and craft makers, as well as local galleries and venues. This also means we don't drive a hard bargain but pay fair prices (at least the rates recommended by the Scottish Artists Union). Drawing and painting teaches you to really see a place and connect with it at a deeper level. This fosters respect for local environments and communities.

Linlithgow Union Canal Society (LUCS), our partner on the Gongoozler Canal Art Experience, is a 100% volunteer-run charity and its and their mission is to promote and encourage the restoration and use of the Union Canal, particularly in and around Linlithgow. One of LUCS’s boats will be our “floating studio” on the canal and we will also use their indoor space at the canal centre as our indoor studio. A small share of each booking under our Year of Scotland’s Coasts and Waters programme goes to LUCS.
