Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
Protecting the worldWe are committed to encouraging our travellers, whether travelling in person or virtually, to be kind to the planet. Each virtual volunteer receives advice about how to care for the environment at home and abroad, including how to avoid single use plastic, reducing water usage and electricity usage. We are striving for all of our projects to be free of single use plastic, and encourage volunteers to join us at home to achieve this goal. As part of this project, there will be online sessions explaining responsible travel and giving tips for how to travel with minimal impact on the environment. Online volunteers can share their own experiences and learn about environmentally products that you can buy that avoid single use plastic.
Reducing carbon emissions
The great thing about virtual volunteering is that there are no carbon emissions. Volunteering from home means that you will protect the environment and help an inspirational charity, but also gain that cultural immersion into life in Spain. Don't worry, you will still get the best of Barcelona!
Planting a tree for you
For each volunteer that joins us, whether online or in person, we plant a tree in Africa. We work with a charity that trains local people how to tend these trees, and ultimately be able to sustainably make a living from them through fruit growing or soap making.
People
Helping local peopleThis project has been established to help charities in Spain to achieve their aims during the coronavirus pandemic and beyond. These charities help both animals and people, and are mainly combating poverty, homelessness and loneliness. Without this project, many charities would not have been able to achieve the necessary basics during the coronavirus pandemic. Volunteers help to deliver e-chats to vulnerable and elderly people, lead exercise classes to those who are stuck at home and provide an insight into the outside world.
Learning local
Whilst you will not be experiencing Spain first hand, we still think it is important that you come away with a deeper knowledge of Spanish culture, language and people. You will receive online talks about the people and places of Barcelona, and come away with a passion for its local people. Additionally, you will learn about the problems that Barcelona faces, and what is being done to combat those. These problems are often ones that we have in our home countries, and the idea is to galvanise action at home as well as abroad.
Supporting local charities in hard times
During the coronavirus pandemic, it has been essential not to let the community and our charity partners feel abandoned. This volunteer project has enabled charities to maintain their important work, keep positive and have a vision for the future.
