Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

You learn a lot about economizing your life when living on a sailboat – even if it is just for a couple of days! Sailing away to remote destinations, as we do on this trip, we give up on some of the convenience provided in locations with mass tourism. Instead, we focus on sustainability, careful use of resources, and proper disposal of waste:

1. Saving freshwater and producing less waste - There is a freshwater tank in the boat which is regularly maintained and filled with drinking water. We inform our clients that it is not necessary to bring packets of drinking water on board as tap-water is drinkable from all the taps on board. It is enough to have one reusable drinking bottle for refills which eliminates excessive waste in the form of plastic water bottles. The drinking water is also used for dishwashing and showering which makes it important for everyone on board to use it consciously. If not used excessively, one tank should last everyone on board quite comfortably for the duration of the trip.

2. Saving electricity and minimizing CO2 emission and noise pollution - On this tour we aim to sail as much as possible. By using the power of the wind instead of engines we keep CO2 emissions and noise pollution down. However, not using engines results in limited electricity in the boat’s battery which we use for everything from charging our phones and gadgets to cooling fans. Clients on board are advised to use electricity consciously and to turn of cooling fans and unplug appliances when they are charged – especially during the night.

3. Caring for the environment and proper waste disposal – On this tour we visit the Kornati National Park and with each ticket purchase we contribute to the maintenance and conservation of the area and its wildlife. However the park’s rangers can only do so much which is why at the beginning of each tourist season our skippers and guides clean the beaches and bays they plan to visit throughout the season. Our aim is to take clients to the most private and secluded beaches and bays, which means we are usually the first one is there at the beginning of each season. Being the first, we find rubbish that has accumulated throughout the off-season and we clean it up before bringing clients there. Strong winds and storms can bring rubbish onto those beaches again anytime, which means there is a need for regular maintenance throughout the tourist season. Our clients are encouraged to help and they often join in making an activity out of it. Throwing waste of any kind overboard is strictly forbidden and, while on board, we encourage our clients to recycle using separate garbage bins provided - plastic, glass, cans, paper, and organic waste.

People

We aim to satisfy our clients’ curiosity about all things Croatia, and a big part of this tour is getting a feel of local history, art, architecture, food, culture, way of life and mentality. A particular point of interest for most is Croatian cuisine, and we aim to show our clients the best of what local cuisine has to offer. On this tour we visit only exquisite local taverns which rely on local produce and fish fished in the area. Being located in isolated locations with little to no infrastructure – these businesses depend on boat-owners to bring over clients. These are not fancy places, but they serve some of the freshest and most local food you could ever hope to try. We have built great relationships with these businesses over the years and with a partner-like relationship we can guarantee the best possible food and treatment of our clients. By supporting local businesses, we are indirectly supporting their local suppliers and communities they work in, keeping them sustainable and their standards high. You won’t find frozen, farmed or overfished fish species here. The reason is simple: the taverns we visit are accessible only by small yachts in bays only big enough to accommodate a few boats at a time. This gives the taverns the possibility to accommodate only a couple dozen customers per evening and the need for sustainable quality instead of quantity. Also, being a part of the Kornati National Park, these restaurants use only sustainable fishing methods which pose no threat to the environment.
