The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel has been awarded the Green Key eco-label, the first private hotel in Finnish Lapland to receive this green award. Green Key is a voluntary eco-label and the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. A Green Key stands for the promise to its guests that by opting to stay with the Green Key establishment, they are helping to make a difference on an environmental level. All the buildings are made from sustainable and renewable Finnish wood and they use only green energy. Each year, the staff personally plants 5,000–10,000 new seedlings in the surrounding forests. They also focus on reducing the size of their carbon footprint by measuring and improving sustainable energy and water saving solutions, in parallel with the effective managing of their waste sorting and the reduction of waste production. Restaurant menus change according to season, and the goal is to have 65 % of main ingredients locally produced therefore reducing food miles and also keeping money spent on resources in the local economy.People
Tourism in Finnish Lapland has become the main source of employment and income, replacing traditional industries such as forestry and reindeer farming. Working within this growth industry in rural and remote areas means that our local operator must take a great deal of responsibility; socially, environmentally and economically. Our local operators fully appreciate the impact of tourist visits on local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that they are having a positive effect. Clients are always encouraged to respect and embrace the lives and culture of local inhabitants by learning a few important words: hello, goodbye, please, thank you etc.In all of our destinations we ensure that we use local suppliers, enabling locally owned businesses and the economies in which they work to benefit directly. Our local operators believe in paying a fair price for all the services provided by the suppliers regardless of where they are in the world. And by using small local businesses, we ensure that income stays in the local economy.
