Belmond Eagle Island closed it doors to visitors for eight months. During this period, the lodge underwent a complete rebuild in line with sound environmental practices. They used World Wildlife Fund endorsed timbers and roof coverings with local thatching grass. The lodge works on an off-the-grid system, so then all power, domestic and potable water, as well as sewerage treatment is generated on site. They also have LED lighting and thermodynamic geyers and use local reclaimed timber. The lodge is considered to be 95% eco-friendly.
Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge also opened after a total rebuild and uses the best eco-friendly sustainable practices which includes design decisions too. Includes sustainable design eco-friendly composite bamboo decking in the principal areas and a solar grid system. In the spa they use organic sustainably sourced brand ThereaNaka. They also have an environmentally-responsible fiberglass swimming pool.
PeopleEnsuring that our clients travel with a purpose is of utmost importance to us.
Traveling to Africa’s remote destinations with your family can be a once-in-a lifetime experience. We support safari lodges and hotels that empower
local communities through job creation and training programmes, philanthropic efforts and connect our guests with Africa’ diverse cultures.
We support properties that are community owned or train and employ staff from local communities. These lodges offer skills transfers, providing an invaluable skill set to local communities throughout Africa.
The Belmond group supports more than 300 global projects designed to support, improve and preserve the local communities where they have a footprint. Savute Elephant Lodge purchased the local thatching grass from the community.
When staying at Eagle Island you visit the nearly Xaxaba Island village, where local people live and this helps support the Bana Ba Letsatsi and Motse Wa Tsholofelo charitities that provide shelter, counselling and support. During construction 98% of the building crew were employed from the area, with a local Botswana construction company contracted to carry out the work.
