Kythera. Greek island walking holiday
Description of Kythera. Greek island walking holiday
This trip can be tailor made throughout the year to suit your requirements
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetThis is a walking & cultural tailor-made tour in the beautiful island of Kythera, opposite the region of Laconia in the Peloponnese, with nature, culture and activity in balanced proportions.
Scenic hikes on trails with panoramic view, abandoned citadels, ruined water-mills, imposing gorges, extended smooth bays, rough steep rocky coasts, endless sparkling blue sea, old shipwrecks, historical and cultural places, traditional lively villages, deserted hamlets, picturesque towns, delicious local cuisine, friendly local people, and all these in a typical Mediterranean scenery in a very picturesque Greek Island.
This island has a very rich wild flora with approximately 800 types of floral species, most of them are fine herbs daily included in the local diet and shrubs with therapeutic – pharmaceutical qualities.
The island of Kythera has many springs, most of which are in the central and northern parts of the island. Water is drinkable and you can fill your flasks with tap water. But even in the event you need to buy bottle water, we advise you to buy large containers, which are easily collected and recycled, and fill their flasks to carry.
No single-use receptacles are used in our picnics; fabric picnic tablecloth instead of a paper or a plastic one, washable dishes and cutlets.
We encourage our guests not to use single-use receptacles for their snacks and picnics and carry their own picnic set!
If you decide to go on a guided tour, your tour guides will probably encourage you to help them clean at least the picnic spot collecting any possible garbage and carried them to the nearest operating bucket. We do it anyway…
We do though use a vehicle for the transfers, when we do not walk (or go cycling). However, as our tours are designed for small groups, they are performed with new tech minibus, which certainly has limited impact to the environment compared to a bus.
Our company promotes ecotourism and sustainable adventure holidays, whilst providing you unique travel experiences!
PeopleWe are a Greek family run tour operator and travel designer with a long experience and we work with local people: We select small locally owned and mainly family run accommodations and restaurants, we shop for our picnics from small local stores and we employ locally based cultural guides for the archeological sites. Also for the meals we choose typical dishes cooked with locally produced ingredients, fact that certainly benefits local agriculture and livestock.
The island of Kythera is famous for its delicious local products: tasteful wine, extra virgin olive oil, pure honey from thyme and other fine herbs, ?sipouro and Fatourada traditional alcoholic beverages, typical olive-oil rusks (“rusks of Kythera”), several types of jams, traditional pasta, unprocessed pure sea salt, great variety of fine herbs, traditional ceramics and many locally made art-crafts and souvenirs with the indigenous flower of Sempreviva (a species of yellow Amaranth).
We strongly recommend you to buy local products as souvenirs and gifts to take back home!
This tour is certainly beneficial for the local economies as it supports the two main activities: tourism and primary production.
We ask our guests to respect the culture and customs of each destination and do everything possible not to disturb the local activities.
