Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We recognise that the Dinder-Alatash ecosystem in Sudan and Ethiopia is fragile and deeply threatened. Human migration from Ethiopia and Eritrea, particularly after recent conflict in the region, poses an existential threat to Dinder National Park. This is particularly the case when coupled with rampant pastoralism, poaching and habitat destruction. We are very keen to educate all clients when it comes to the plight of this precious ecosystem and its wild inhabitants. Particularly valuable are the few remaining lions in Dinder, thought until recently to be extinct. This ecosystem also supports regionally important populations of leopard, striped hyena, spotted hyena, Heuglin's gazelle and Blue Nile Patas monkey. We go to great lengths to ensure that we view game ethically, and will never pursue a sighting of an animal that is showing signs of stress or is behaving abnormally due to our presence. We will only drive off road if absolutely necessary and when this causes no damage to the flora in the park.

By bivouacing throughout this tour we greatly minimise the impact of our visit on the local environment. We use water sparingly, and limit our usage of fuel as far as is possible. Whilst this means that the accommodation is not comfortable or luxurious, it ensures an authentic experience that causes no damage to the ecosystem. We take all refuse with us when we leave.

People

We strongly encourage clients to interact with local people wherever possible, and this includes contributing to the local economy by visiting local markets and purchasing locally made crafts and goods. The opportunities for such visits depend on road conditions and associated travel times, but generally we expect to be able to spend time with local people or in local markets in Khartoum, the Island of Meroe and Dinder town.

We always ask clients who join this tour to be as respectful as possible to local cultures and traditions throughout their stay. This includes, but is not limited to, dressing modestly as far as possible. We ask clients to respect religious beliefs that may differ to their own, although we will never ask clients to act or behave in a way with which they are not entirely comfortable. Some of the areas this tour visits, particularly in the Dinder area, are practically never visited by foreigners and, as such, our visit may attract a lot of attention in the local community. This may seem intrusive at times, but we ask clients to recognise that a visit from us is a new experience for many local people, and that their attention comes from a place of friendliness and curiosity.
