PlanetTravel has the power to transform not only the traveler but also our world. This belief forms the foundation of our business. We have a deep commitment to protecting and preserving the destinations we visit and building a better world through sustainable travel.
We operate on a completely paperless basis when communicating with clients and our contacts on the ground, and recycle all plastic bottles from the tours.
For our tours to Ethiopia, we reserve a portion of the revenue to support the World Resources Institute. WRI’s mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect Earth’s environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations. In Ethiopia, WRI engages in sustainable urbanization, climate policy and analysis, forest restoration, and access to information issues.
We encourage travelers to reduce waste and consumption wherever possible. Limiting water usage by actions like taking shorter showers and declining bedding changes, for example, can be very beneficial, specifically in the destinations in the northern part of the country.
PeopleWe start by focusing our tours during the off season and shoulder seasons in Ethiopia, creating economic stability in the tourism sector. By booking directly through our local partners at Pagumen, utilizing local guides, encouraging clients to buy local souvenirs, and staying at locally owned & operated lodges, not only do our travelers have better experiences but as much money as possible stays within Ethiopia.
To date, 90.31% of the total cost of all tours booked with us has gone directly back into the local economies.
We reserve 5% of our clients' total package cost to invest in local communities and the environment through our partnering 501(c)(3) Second Look Worldwide. These investments are tangible projects which our clients can see during their trip. The local communities choose the projects and are dependent on their most immediate needs; however, we focus on projects that support water management solutions. For example, in Ethiopia, we will be working in the Simien region of the country to support water management practices.
Clients on this tour to Ethiopia will be able to see the vibrancy of Ethiopian food and culture, both past and present, and see and interact with locals throughout the trip. We explicitly choose the tribal communities visited in the country's southern region with the locals in mind. We focus on taking clients to tribes authentically, maintaining their livelihoods without a high level of tourist influence.
We encourage travelers to purchase locally produced goods and utilize local services such as souvenirs, crafts, meals, guides, and establishments. These all can enhance the traveler experience and have a positive impact in Ethiopia.
We provide accurate pre-trip information concerning Ethiopia, including the social and political situation, and require all travelers to respect Ethiopia's local customs and traditions. Being mindful of our actions abroad always results in a better experience while traveling.
