Planet

Located in Assam, Jalinga tea estate where this project is based is the only CO2 Neutral certified tea estate in the world with no usage of chemicals, fertilizers & pesticides. The estate produces approx. 6000 tonnes of inhouse compost annually and conserve approx. 400acres of forest that is attached to the Tea estate. Thetea estate is spread over 11100 hectares of hill tea plantatio and they protect 130 hectares of virgin forest at Jalinga & maintain the eco system. Also growing medicinal herbs & plants.

Started in 1935, the tea gardens moved 100% into organic farming in 2004 under Inhana Bioscience’s technology of Rational Farming Technology. Organic farming under IRFT Technology adopts a system considered more scientific than conventional chemical farming method.

This technology has sustainably transitioned the tea estate into Organic. In addition the adoption of Novcom composting method, which ensures shortest biodegradation period of 21 days; enables reduction of Green house gasses by at least 66% or 2/3rd of the emission potential for all other biodegradation processes (takes 60 to 90 days).

Travellers who will join this program will get a chance to contribute towards helping with organic farm work and learn eco friendly practices that will help the environment. In addition you will also be staying in an eco friendly accommodation and environment.

People

Jalinga tea plantation where this program is based currently supports Small Tea Growers & currently have 40+ farmers who they support with their production & hand hold them in the organic practices etc & export 100% of their production worldwide. 65% of workers at Jalinga are women of total 1500. Workers fairtrade joint body committee consists of 60% women workers since 5 years and stood up for the local elections.
The tea estate has its own Special needs school on site that helps children of tea plantation workers who would not have access to quality education or facilities. Contributing towards social development in the area and supporting communities. Jalinga also has its own hospital/clinic, ambulance etc. which caters to the workers & their families. They also support women in the community in particular in their pursuit of healthy & sustain livelihoods. The project provide a forum for issues such as family health, Income generation, access to resources. For the families of the plantation workers who live on site the project also provides TLUD gasifier cookstoves to each worker.

By joining this program travellers will be contributing towards generating an additional income for the plantation workers, assisting with activities in the clinics or in the farm and factory and also part of their funds will be going towards the cookstove project. Anyone joining and assisting in the disabled school and towards women's empowerment will also be contributing towards community development goals of the tea estate.
