Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Your accommodation in Ilulissat has been Green Key certified since 2000. The Green Key award is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. This prestigious eco-label represents a commitment by businesses that their premises adhere to the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Since 2013 the hotel is 100 per cent CO2 neutral and in 2014 they installed solar panels that produce approximately 20 percent of their electricity. In December 2012 a new hydroelectric plant was opened near Ilulissat and it now provides all the electricity for the whole town, inc additional sustainable power for the hotel.

Food is an important element of your stay and the hotel serves as much local food as possible, most of which they produce themselves. Ingredients such as musk-ox, reindeer, Greenland halibut, Arctic hare, ptarmigan, wolffish, mussels, sea urchins, redfish and are on the menu daily, along with locally foraged herbs from the fells and seasonal vegetables. They have recently been awarded the prestigious New Nordic Food Award, and in 2013 they received the Brugsen’s award for use of Greenlandic ingredients.

Tourism is a vital source of income to the population if Ilulissat, and your hotel is a major employer to the town folk. 60 staff members are employed all year round, rising to 70 people during the peak season.

The hotel takes pride in offering a range of internships and training opportunities to their staff. The number of trainees at the hotel varies between eight and twelve and internship and training length can vary between 2 weeks to 4 years, depending on the role. They also work closely with the local community to prepare school students for the transition from school to work or higher education. The project is called ”Sapiik”, which means ”courage to get started” and they offer 2 week placements to students.

The Greenlandic trade union movement presented its special Management Award to the hotel's managing director for having “contributed to inspiring and encouraging the people of Greenland to educate and better themselves, not just for their own benefit but also for the benefit of progress in Greenland “.
