Description of Northern Lights short break to Finland

For a long weekend with a difference, take a short break to Finland to spot the Northern Lights. When the lights show and for how long is always uncertain, but to stand a chance of seeing them at their best you need to travel to a remote landscape with zero light pollution and proximity to solar wind activity. Harriniva, in the wilds of Finnish Lapland, is above the Arctic Circle and the perfect place to see the Lights, and you’ll be based here for this short break. Experienced guides will lead you deep into the wilderness to scan the skies for Nature’s greatest light show. On one evening you’ll travel by snowmobile to a remote spot, and on another spend the night in a wilderness cabin in the forest where there isn’t a scrap of light pollution.

During the day, enjoy some unique winter activities, including a 17km dogsled ride, a visit to a reindeer farm to learn about herding life and a presentation about the Northern Lights, with pancakes cooked on an open fire. Come ready for fresh air and a fascinating and varied few days. A good level of fitness is necessary to enjoy the dogsledding and walks.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Northern Lights short break to Finland

Accommodation and Meals:
We spend two nights in comfortable log cabins near Harriniva and one in simple shared accommodation with maximum 8 persons per room. The accommodation is built entirely from wood and in the wilderness cabins no electricity is used, relying totally on wood-burning stoves to provide heat. This communal style of living and using minimal energy really reduces our environmental impact. Meals are locally sourced wherever possible and menus may include traditional fare like hearty stews, herring with potatoes, meatballs or wild berries with porridge. In the huts, guides prepare the meals and encourage clients to get involved with the process.

This trip offers a number of environmentally friendly winter activities, including: dogsledding, snowshoeing, visiting the ice hotel and searching for Northern Lights. If possible, man-power is used over motors to minimise carbon emissions and there is constant attention to a strong ‘leave no trace’ policy. The dogs are taken great care of and clients will get an insight into the schedule of nurture which goes into working with these animals. We also visit a reindeer farm and museum where everyone will have the opportunity to ride a reindeer and try some lasso throwing. The farm is part of a co-operative and is dependent on tourist visits like this as it is in such a remote place.

UK Office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK Offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

A Fair Deal:
Our local supplier aims to generate employment and revenue in the Muonio region by working closely with local communities. Local people, companies and services are used to operate the tours. They are paid and treated fairly for their valuable insider’s expertise. Supporting sustainable tourism activities in the area creates alternative career paths for local people and also helps to promote protection of the area against environmental harm. We train our staff in sustainability issues and they are expected to communicate this to clients.

Group Size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, family-run hotels that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.
