Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Activity & Environment
Cycling trips in general have a minimal impact on the environment, erosion on and adjacent to popular paths is a growing problem in certain places and therefore our trip leaders encourage clients to stick to advised routes in order to minimise this. We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy, whereby we ensure no rubbish including plastic has been left behind in the places we visit. To reduce our dependency on single use plastics, we also encourage our guests to pack a reusable water bottle which can be refilled throughout the trip.

Throughout this trip guests can experience cycling through colourful tulip fields, and on day two we will have the chance to visit the Hortus Bulborum, a unique garden museum dedicated to the preservation of rare and historic bulbs, home to more than 4,000 tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other special flowers are planted here. Guests can also visit the Ecomare seal sanctuary, which has been awarded the ‘Green Key’ for preserving and nurturing the natural and historical heritage.

UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through engergy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

Community & Culture
Although this trip is focused on cycling, there are still plenty of opportunities to learn about some of the history and culture The Netherlands has to offer. We’ll visit the traditional village of Zaanse Schans renowned for its operating windmills some of which date back to the 17th century. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the village and look out for other significant sites such as the clock museum and cheese farm.
Throughout our trips we like to give back to places we visit by supporting local communities, for instance on this trip we visit the small brewery near Oudeschild where guests can enjoy a locally-brewed beer. Our financial support enables family businesses and smaller establishments to sustain their work and allows local residents to seek employment opportunities through our tourism.

Group Size:
This is a medium sized group tour, meaning that we have a small impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. This number also allows us to stay in unique accommodation that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

Accommodation & Meals
During this trip we spend seven nights in twin or double cabins on board the Leafde fan Fryslân sailing around the Dutch landscapes including the Wadden Sea, Lake Ijsselmeer, and the beauty of the North Sea beaches. When meals are included, local ingredients will be used where possible.
