Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Our local partner in Peru hold Rainforest Alliance certification for their Cusco based operations; together we seek to use hotels and guesthouses that balance protecting the environment to have a minimal impact while also delivering the highest level of product and services.

A great example of this is the hotel in the Sacred Valley that has developed a 'earth to table' concept using the ten acres of land they own. Quinoa, corn and potatoes are all farmed using traditional hand tools and oxen with produce used in the hotel.

We encourage all our guests to use refillable water bottles to minimise plastic waste and are progressively providing fresh water coolers on our vehicles.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

The Impacts of this Trip

Our local partners in Peru, in conjunction with a number of leading hotels are offering the Cusco village of Mullaka’s Misminay community hospitality training courses, focusing on skills such as cooking and housekeeping to assist this community get higher paid jobs in the tourism sector.

On day six we spend the day and overnight on Lake Titicaca (home to the Uros people) staying on the lesser visited island of Taquile which has preserved much of its Inca and pre-Inca heritage and the islanders still speak the language of the Inca - Runa Simi or Quechua. We take our time walking across the island and we will have the chance to buy locally produced embroidery - the men's handiwork for once!

Peru will well known for its fruit and vegetable production. In Cusco we head to San Pedro market to buy fruit from local traders, heading to a local restaurant we then put our purchases to good use making fruit smoothies. Not only do we directly support local businesses its also a good opportunity to experience local life away from the tourist crowds.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
