Description of Croatia adventure holiday for families

This Croatia adventure holiday for families is a small group tour, based in the fishing village of Novigrad on the Adriatic coast, ninety minutes north of Split. Unlike several spots on this coastline, Novigrad has not fallen foul of mass tourism and still has a sleepy, traditional feel about it. It is also the perfect base for many of our outdoor activities during the week.

The price of the holiday depends on the amount of activities you choose to include in your itinerary. These include sea kayaking in Novigrad Bay just near your hotel, a visit to the Roman and Venetian town of Zadar, also on the coast, as well as hiking, biking and white water rafting trips. Many of these outdoor adventures take place in some of Croatia’s magnificent national parks. Go cycling in Krka River National Park, for example, famous for its 44m-high Skradinski Buk waterfall, which is multi layered and breathtakingly beautiful. Or hiking in Paklenica National Park, a landscape of karst limestone valleys and canyons.

White water rafting on the Cetina River and canoeing on the Zrmanja River are also very popular with our families which is why the recommended minimum age on this trip is eight years old. Guided by local outdoor experts throughout, each day brings a new landscape, seascape or adventure for you and your family to enjoy together.

The price of this holiday includes return flights between London and Split or Zadar. Please chat with us about other regional options. We also include group airport transfers, accommodation, seven breakfasts, three lunches and four dinners.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Croatia adventure holiday for families

Novigrad is a small fishing village situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, deep in Novigrad Bay. The village manages to preserve its authentic traditional architecture and remains untouched by modern tourism.

It is scattered along the coastline under the well preserved 13th century fortress Fortica. The Novigrad Bay area is surrounded by National Parks and nature reserves: Kornati Islands, Krka River, Paklenica Canyon, Plitvice Lakes, Velebit Mountain, Telascica Bay, Vrana Lake. The morning fishermen’s market and quiet village atmosphere is perfect for guests who want to get away from the big summer crowds.

Sea kayaking, canoeing and river kayaking as well as hiking are included in the program as everyday activities. For all of the activities included in the program our guides take every measure to minimize the impact on the local environment. An example of this is during hiking trails the guide will always discuss the impact that the increased footpath traffic is having on the environment and will lead by example in collecting litter left by less well informed parties along the way; clients are encouraged to do the same. We also try, wherever possible, to avoid tourist bottlenecks at peak times and this trip will get you away from the main tourist areas.

Our suppliers apply significant emphasis on ensuring that the sustainable tourism brought to these areas benefits the local communities, because of their commitment to responsible travel. They strive to have little impact on the places they go and believe in choosing modes of travelling that preserve the nature and cultures of the places they experience. They are passionate about the places they visit and are committed to designing and operating the holidays in such a way to ensure they maximize the positive effects of tourism on the local economies, cultures and the environment whilst minimizing any negative impacts. There are a number of ways they work to achieve this. Participating in any one of the trips you will bring work and income to the people who are still recovering from the war torn years as this was an area severely affected by war. All tour leaders are trained to minimize the impact on the environment while supporting the experience of the guests. Leaders practice a ‘Leave No Trace’ principle on the trail; recycle whenever possible in all the regions they travel and donate leftover foods to various community programs.

The trip ensures that the local people benefit as much as possible in the form of farm products trade, new jobs and services provided. We consider it our responsibility to lead efforts to maintain and preserve the integrity of this fledgling sector by petitioning the introduction of tighter controls over the use of the country’s natural resources. Our suppliers offer new perspectives to travellers by providing more authentic holidays that allow a true experience of destinations and its culture while contributing to wellbeing and preserving those areas.

The local guides advise and teach the guests how to observe and photograph local wildlife without impacting on its behavior or natural habitat. All rubbish from picnic lunches and snacks are collected of and disposed of properly and guests are always recommended to carry reusable water carriers rather than plastic bottles during day activities.

When planning and creating new activities and itineraries the most environmentally friendly transport methods are always considered and the smallest suitable vehicle is used for each transfer therefore minimizing pollution from larger vehicles. Wherever possible journeys for airport transfers or activities are also always combined to reduce the number of journeys for each itinerary.

3 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The Zrmanja River canoe safari. Beautiful scenery, good rapids, swimming and jumping in river.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare for a long day in high temperatures in July/August, although we are told it can rain. Take lots of sunscreen and water. The days were long and tiring but well worth it. Distances were longer than we thought. We were not aware that the itinerary would change for no reason. Optional excursions were very expensive.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I am sure it benefited local people as canoes, kayaks and bicycles were used or we walked. Rubbish was always thrown away sensibly. Krka NP was very busy so not sure what the long term effect might be here. However, it was a beautiful place and not to be missed.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Some very good memories. In all the holiday was a success. Although one of the main reasons for booking this trip were three particular activities. The canoeing was fantastic; the white water rafting was disappointing as it was extremely busy on the river and hardly any rapids; the zip wire didn't happen at all and we were assured this was going to be on the itinerary.
