Description of Jordan holiday, tailor made

This Jordan holiday is a tailor made trip, following a carefully crafted itinerary that not only brings you to the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra, but also to some of the country’s greatest natural heritage sites, such as the Dana Biosphere Reserve.

Starting in the country’s great capital city of Amman, you will meet your driver guide who will accompany you throughout the holiday. Apart from Petra, there are other great classical sites to see in Amman including Jerash, one of best-preserved provincial Roman cities in the world, preserved through time by sand. Wander through its cobbled streets, packed with beautiful shops that are shaded behind magnificent stone columns. Or Madaba, which dates back 3500 years and has some of the most stunning ancient mosaics scattered throughout the town. It is also a town of great churches, the most famous being the Greek Orthodox Church of St George, with its magnificent Byzantine map of the Middle East.

The natural landscapes of Jordan are equally magnificent, Wadi Rum desert Nature Reserve a must visit and we can organise a night of camping here for those who would like to experience some serious star gazing. We also highly recommend spending time at Dana Biosphere Nature Reserve, staying in a multi award winning ecolodge. Straddling the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the towering cliffs, canyons and sandstone mountains are home to wildlife such as the Arabian Oryx and ibex.

The best times to travel to Jordan are spring and autumn, in order to avoid extremely high summer temperatures or plummeting ones in the desert during winter months, between November and January.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Jordan holiday, tailor made

Environment

The RSCN is a relatively new organisation, and has made some great strides in conservation in Jordan – not just in terms of preserving natural the landscape but also reintroducing endangered species (the reserve at Shaumari played a major role in the conservation and reintroduction across the region of the Arabian Oryx).

In the Dana Nature Reserve you have one night in the Dana Guesthouse and one night in the Feynan Ecolodge, properties developed by the RSCN. These eco developments all feature high insulation (to keep interiors cool), solar hot water systems and the use of local traditional building materials and building methods.

The eco developments also provide an important source of income for biodiversity protection in the country; in 2007 the income generated by tourist visits to RSCN sites was over 45% of the annual conservation costs and supported hundreds of local jobs. This employment in turn provides an alternative to harmful land uses such as grazing and hunting.

Community

The RSCN also works with local communities to preserve their way of life whilst also ensuring they benefit from increased levels of tourism. When visiting Wild Jordan, the headquarters in Amman, you get a great overview of their activities, and then at Dana get to see the fruits of their labour.

In Wadi Rum the operation of jeep excursions into the desert is in the hands of the local Bedouin – one of the ways of ensuring there is a trickle-down effect from visitors by ensuring a constant source of employment for the Bedouin.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The Feynan lodge is a terrific place to stay, and the walk down from Dana is a very enjoyable one, through surprisingly varied scenery.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Jordan is a very friendly, welcoming country, with plenty to see and do. It is quite compact, so there are not long distances to travel. We stayed for 10 days, and would happily have stayed longer, but equally it makes a good destination for a shorter break as well.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, to a large extent. It is a pity that there are not more, good quality locally-owned hotels available in some of the main destinations.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable - it was an excellent break.
