Description of Tailor made holiday in Venezuela

This tailor made holiday in Venezuela follows a carefully crafted itinerary that covers some of the country’s most beautiful regions, which you will explore with driver guides. With the advantage of several domestic flights you can get to see a lot of this country in two weeks, and take in the hidden gems of its fine natural heritage, from great waterfalls to stunning wetlands. Nature lovers will revel in Venezuela’s biodiverse beauty much of which is still very much off the tourist trail.

Although you will most likely fly into Caracas, the capital city, we don’t include a city visit on this particular itinerary, recommending an almost immediate connection to Barinas to explore the Los Llanon wetland region. We can tweak this itinerary to suit your interests and time frame, and if you choose to spend time in Caracas, we will happily organise this for you and recommend cultural activities as well as a cable car journey up to Avila National Park.

Los Llanos wetlands and grasslands are what some may describe as the Wild West of Venezuela. Staying at an eco camp, explore this region of vast cattle ranches on foot, in a 4X4 or on horseback. Or take a boat trip out across the lagoons and creeks to see capybara, caiman, turtles and iguanas in and around the waterside.

Fly east this time to the city of Ciudad Bolivar, named after its most famous resident, Simon Bolivar, otherwise known as El Libertador because he contributed to many countries gaining independence from Spanish colonialism. The city still has a very colonial feel to it, however, and is very interesting to explore, with the likes of Casa San Isidro, Bolivar’s house, the 18th century colonial cathedral and the Jesús Soto Modern Art Museum definite highlights.

Your next stop is Canaima National Park, most famous for Angel Falls which is the world’s highest single drop waterfall, plunging 807 metres over the edge of Auyán-tepui Mountain. Learn all about the natural wonders of the park from your Purmon Indian expert guide, who will show you one of the most exciting sleep spots of your trip: a hammock in a remote spot surrounded by the misty plateaus of the park.

We recommend a couple of day’s on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast enjoying some beach time at the end of your adventure. Los Roques Islands are stunning, a marine national park boasting stunning cays and coral reefs, perfect for snorkelling and swimming off white sandy coves.

Venezuela has something to offer all year round to the adventurous traveller, but we think that the best time to follow this itinerary below is during the wet season as Canaima ‘s waterfalls are in full flow (May to December). Also Los Llanos has a wonderful array of wildlife during this time and the Caribbean coast is always perfect.

Most animals have been hunted around this area for years. But now, gradually, the local Hatos (cattle ranches) are beginning to protect the animals on their land. One of the pioneers in this has been Hato Cedral, a beautiful working cattle ranch covering over 50,000 hectares of land, 3 hours by road from Barinas. It has been protecting its wildlife for over 25 years and is teeming with huge numbers of animals and birds. So much so, do not be surprised to find iguanas outside your bedroom door, red howler monkeys in the trees above, caimans and crocodiles minding their own business, capybaras munching grass at the poolside as well as the illusive Anaconda!

Excursions are taken with experienced guides by motor boat or safari style truck and wildlife you are likely to see includes capybara, caiman, howler monkeys, anacondas, river dolphins, anteaters, the orinoco crocodile, armadillos, deer, burrowing owls, foxes, iguanas, big cats, turtles, piranha fish and over 300 species of birds.

The excellent natural conditions of hydrological systems create a large water reserve that helps to sustain the abundant animal life and vegetation year round. The ranch has become a landmark for international researchers and studiers of the natural sciences and is endorsed by The National Geographic Society.

Excursions to the Angel Falls are operated by a local company who employ Purmon Indians as their guides. Many of the Indians have self-taught English and know the area intimately, re-telling ancestral stories of the Angel Falls long before Jimmy Angel crashed his plane and reported them to the rest of the world.
