Description of Riding holiday in Kyrgyzstan

Saddle up for a unique horse trekking adventure along ancient Silk Road trails in Kyrgyzstan on paths taken by ancient warriors, nomads and traders through one of the world's most pristine wildernesses.

You begin, though, in the laidback Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, famed for its Osh bazaar. You'll also visit the renowned felt-making village of Kochkorka, before fetching up at the magical 3000m glacial lake of Son Kul to meet our host family and horses.

From here, each day's riding reveals unforgettable vistas. Cross the Uzun-Bulak Pass and camp wild by the Kurtka River, hug the banks of Kyrgyzstan’s largest river (the Naryn) to Ak Tal Chat, then enjoy two days of remote riding along two other rivers to another remote camp by the Black Lake.

From here, it's a beautiful ride climbing to the Tuz Ashuu pass, high in the aptly-named Mountains of Heaven, from where you cross the road to China to the ancient caravanserai at Tash Rabat for a well-earned day's rest.

Remount to climb through the At Bashy range for your final night camping in the wild, before descending to Kyzyl-Too to say farewell to your horses and drive to the small market town of Naryn, then back to Bishkek for a fabulous farewell dinner.

Price includes all activities/equipment, tour leaders, local guides and drivers, meals, mineral water, all transport (excluding international flights) , all accommodation and all entrance fees as outlined in the itinerary.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Riding holiday in Kyrgyzstan

In Central Asia we have developed unique relationships with many of the semi-nomadic peoples of the region and through our form of interactive, socially conscience tourism have helped them adapt to the modern, changing world by providing important income opportunities. With Sogan Bai, an eagle hunter from the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, or Noorgul, a shepherdess from the pristine Son Kul, or Nazira and her family at Tash Rabat, we have been responsible for introducing them to the homestay market, helping them to provide good, clean and interesting accommodation which in term allows them to educate their children, improve their standard of living and look after their ill.

The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains – the nomads financially and us with the wonderful welcome and experience they give us. On our horse treks, we work exclusively with the fine horse-man Anar Bek, who along with his family and members of the local community, ensure that the horses we trek with are well treated, well fed and well looked after. Wherever possible we stay in locally owned accommodation, eat in locally owned establishments and purchase supplies from the local nomads.

When you take one of our trips, we make a contribution to “Carbon Clear” – an organisation who work with hundreds of organisations to measure their carbon footprint and reduce their carbon emissions. We also support several NGOs around the world, all carefully selected to improve the standard of living for the communities we visit.
