Ancient history, rich traditions and Islamic culture create a seductive mix on this Iran tailor made holiday, which takes you across the country to discover incredible Islamic treasures, remote Kurdish regions and the story of one of the world’s oldest civilisations.Beginning in Tehran, you can explore the Golestan Palace before flying southwest to the city of Ahwaz. Ahwaz is in the province of Khuzestan, which was the capital of the Elamite Kingdom in the second millennium BCE. Explore this ancient civilisation with visits to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Choga Zanbil, one of the best preserved ziggurats (a raised, brick temple) in the world; as well as Susa, a former Elamite city. You’ll then travel north to the mountainous province of Kermanshah, Iran’s Kurdish heartland. Here, you can visit the Achaemenid and Partian ruins at Bisotun and explore the underground caves of Ali Sadr by boat before continuing on to Hamedan and the holy city of Qom.
This Iran tailor made holiday then visits Yazd – the centre of Zoroastrianism and one of the world’s oldest cities, dating back some 5,000 years. From here, you’ll follow the old Silk Road trails to Kerman for a city tour including the mosque and bazaar, then fly onward to Mashad – the holiest city in Iran, filled with stunning Islamic artefacts.
