Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Borneo family holiday, wildlife and beaches

Excursions and transfers are done on a shared basis to minimize the carbon emissions from the vehicles and boats used on this safari. Throughout this safari we also, wherever possible, promote the use of eco-lodges, and locally built accommodation which results in the traveller having a minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Conservation is also high on our list of priorities and is reflected in the visitation of the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre which supports the protection and conservation of Orangutans throughout the state of Sabah.

If travellers would like to contribute to the protection of primates throughout the world please request further details regarding our work with conservation companies.

We aim to minimise our impact on the environment as much in the UK as we would do in any of our destination countries. We do this through recycling of any office waste including, paper, plastic, cans, glass, refuse, in partnership with the Brighton and Hove Borough. The purpose of our safaris is to contribute to local populations, communities and projects. We give our travellers advice on how to interact with the local population, flora and fauna in order to minimise any negative impact.

Where possible, we always use local suppliers in preference to others, whether this is in the purchase of provisions, accommodation, transport or equipment. Through the employment of our local ground operators, who use local guides and drivers, money is fed directly back into individual families and villages that would otherwise not benefit from tourism, as well as giving more jobs to local people. Great guiding is essential on wildlife adventures and few people know a place better than the locals. Even on specialist led trips, we still try our best to use the local guides along side, we whole-heartedly do not believe in taking jobs from local populations for our own needs.

When it comes to accommodation, we have tried to use lodges that are further away from the usual tourist trail, thus spreading the money spent by tourists further into the communities. This is turn shows the economic importance of the wildlife and natural assets of the area.

We make sure tourists have the opportunity to buy local souvenirs and handicrafts, assisting further to contribute to their community, and always give support to local communities and conservation agencies. We advise people not to bargain just for the sake of it and because it is the ‘thing to do’; you should pay what you feel the object is worth to yourself and the vendor, bearing in mind local cultures.

Please note that we give a direct contribution of each safari sold to conserving the wildlife, helping local communities and supporting local conservation agencies.

1 Reviews of Borneo family holiday, wildlife and beaches

4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying at the Kinabatangan River - the wildlife was amazing and the people were wonderful, so friendly and welcoming. We saw several different types of monkeys and birds, pygmy elephants and crocodiles and the kids loved it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I wouldn't necessarily recommend staying in the longhouse at this stage, we didn't feel it was very authentic.

We would highly recommend hiring an English speaking guide. It really helped us to identify the different wildlife, he took us to markets and got us to try different foods and he generally just made everything so much easier for us with the children. It really helped us to absorb the experience and he was able to accommodate our wishes for example he organised an excursion to the sandakan war memorial while we ere out there (highly recommend it) and this was not something we had considered in the UK, but after reading about it we though it was important to see.

We'd recommend do be adventurous and trust your guide. The Rasa Ria is absolutely lovely but the children and even my comfort loving husband enjoyed got more out of the Kinabatangan. I can't speak highly enough for the Myne resort- what it doesn't have in luxury it makes up for with engaging friendly staff and location.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I'm not sure- I think by using local resorts on our travel we injected money back into the economy more so than we would have done had we stayed solely at the Rasa Ria. We went to local markets etc which I think helps

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
