Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: 18 day Sri lanka tour, private departure

This itinerary includes a stay at this truly unique eco lodge. Comprising of several clusters of mud-walled houses, one of which sits on stilts above the ground, your stay at The Mudhouse will be a peaceful, calm, mainly alfresco experience. The ‘décor’ is locally sourced: tree roots, log tables, bamboo wind chimes etc. The outdoor bathrooms also take advantage of their natural surroundings, complete with showers cut into tree branches, although toilets are, you'll be pleased to hear, indoors.

Yala National Park covers an area of around 129,700 hectares, with 14,000 hectares open to visitors. The park's two main sections are conveniently known as Yala West and Yala East. Yala West, or Ruhuna National Park, is considered to have the world’s highest density of leopards, with approximately 35 leopards believed to reside within the park's boundaries. Beside leopards, other animals that can be seen in the park are elephants and sloth bear; a variety of deer and monkey; mongoose & crocodiles. Bird lovers will favour Yala East, with its huge array of bird life - over 130 recorded avian species. There are significant numbers of water birds too, such as the Lesser Flamingo & rare Black Necked Stork, and during the north-east monsoon the park’s lagoons are visited by vast numbers of migrating waterfowl.

We are proud to be supporting the Leopard Guardian Project at Yala National Park. This is a programme intended to help safeguard leopards in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka - one of the best places in the world to see leopard.

Sri Lanka’s marine life is superb, and several spots are especially great for whale-watching. In the south, the previously little-known port of Mirissa is now a launch base for small enterprise trips to spot blue & sperm whales, & dolphins. Many of the crew are ex-fishermen, bankrupted by the 2004 tsunami and saved from relying on hand-outs by this new income. Promising a nigh-on guaranteed chance of spotting a whale during peak season, Mirissa's waters are amongst the world’s best locations to spot these incredible mammals. The season here runs from November through to April.

Local partners.
We hire local guides and drivers whenever possible. We also insist that any travel partners we work with adhere to our responsible travel policies, and ideally put responsible tourism at the heart of everything they do. We work collaboratively with them to ensure an ongoing exchange of information, so we can all continue to improve our work around responsible tourism.
