Responsible tourism: Australia Northern Territory holiday

This family business is committed to environmental sustainability and are constantly implementing strategies to minimise their environmental footprint with the goal of becoming carbon neutral in the near future. Tours visit many pristine regions and culturally sensitive sites, consequently preservation of these areas is of the utmost importance. The company’s agreement with Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife, Traditional Owners and the Northern Land Council includes an Environmental Management Policy which must be adhered to, otherwise permits can be withdrawn. The company are Advanced Eco Certified and are bound to all Ecotourism Australia’s ecologically sustainable tourism practices.

An Environmental Impact Plan is in place at the coastal camp with such strategies as: installation of low flow showerheads/spring loaded taps which minimise the amount of water used by approximately 10%; use of high pressure hoses to wash vehicle/trailer/equipment in order to save water by over 25%; installation of waterless eco toilets resulting in no pollution, no water required and no disturbance of the environment. In addition, only biodegradable cleaning products are used and solar power has been installed for lighting, fans and refrigeration which is a 100% decrease in diesel generator fuel. Guests are provided with environmentally aware insecticide alternatives; complementary refillable water bottles, and are educated on recycling practices at the camp.

Guides inform guests of the importance of understanding cultural sensitivity and environmental sustainability whilst on tour, such as: respecting conditions surrounding photographing of sites which may be protected, not touching rock art sites, avoiding disruption to wildlife and breeding sites, reporting of any noxious weed or feral animals. Travel tips are provided to all guests to alert them to the fragility of the areas in which they tour.

Through tourism the company helps to create jobs in many Indigenous communities in the regions in which they travel. The local people are encouraged to embrace their culture through the creation of art work and through expression of song, dance and storytelling. This interaction helps ‘Balanda’ (Indigenous word for white person) break down any prior social prejudices due to interracial contact previously being limited.

The company has made financial donations directly to the Traditional Owners of Gunbalanya (where Injalak Art Centre is situated) community to assist with creating literature about their region’s culture, providing accurate information for tourists.

Supporting education in the region, the company has partnered with West Arnhem College to provide an annual excursion studying cultural aspects of Cobourg. In addition to this, mentoring some of the students undertaking a Certificate 1 in Tourism, in the area of work placements, Work Health and Safety, training and the benefits of working within the industry. Over 50% of students are Indigenous.

With a passion for the environment, the company supports and works closely with conservation groups to help protect local marine environments, and together have created a Coastal Clean-up Plan.
