Small group family holiday

This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your children to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves. Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka and Maldives family adventure holiday

Environment

We stay in a wide range of accommodations along the way. After the first night near Colombo Airport we have two days in the ‘mud house’, a rustic thatched hut all built with locally sourced materials and only linked to the national grid in 2012. It’s now a major employer within its local community and has a real back to nature feel about it. Towards the end of our stay in Sri Lanka we have night in Udawalawe National Park where we stay in a tented camp in the park itself, far preferable to the intrusion of a more permanent structure in this pristine environment. Finally on the Maldives section of this trip we use a traditional Dhoni boat, the crew take time out to pick up plastic off the beaches we visit, whilst there is no expectation a helping hand from customers is always welcome.

A favourite part of this tour for many travellers is our trip around some of the villages near to Giritale by “Land Master”, (a two wheeled tractor with a trailer) the most common and versatile mode of transport of the farming communities, during which we visit a chena or paddy cultivation of a local farmer. As well as proving many opportunities for 2 way cultural interaction with the friendly Sri Lankans, your visit also helps provide much needed income to the local people.

Sri Lanka is famous for its wildlife such as elephants and turtle, and our visit to the national parks at Udawalawe, helps to support the conservation of the animals and their habitat. This is both through the financial benefit of or entrance fees but also the interest shown by our visits to such places helps provide the government and local people alike with an incentive for their preservation for future generations to enjoy.

Community

On this tour we use knowledgeable Sri Lankan tour leaders with a strong love for their own country, its rich culture and traditions, and a desire to share its wonders with you. They’ll seek out opportunities to show and involve you in everyday Sri Lankan life; for example stopping off at the roadside to watch toddy tappers at work, paying a visit to a village brick kiln or passing around unusual and exotic fruits purchased in the local market.

Whilst on the tour there are many opportunities to spread the positive financial impact of your visit, for example we will eat out at local restaurants and there will be opportunities to shop for traditional crafts such as batik or woodcarvings in both markets and at the workshops where they are made. Our interest also helps to keep the skills in making these traditional crafts alive.

Following the 2004 tsunami, we shipped out urgent supplies of clothing and bedding to Sri Lanka and funded the construction of 60 temporary shelters. In the long term we are working together with the Rotary Club of Sri Lanka, of which our ground agent is an active member, on a regeneration project in Habaraduwa, a community close to Galle on the south coast.

In addition to the above, we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key and so all staff, Tour leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage. As well as this, we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of UK travel industry bodies Tourism Concern and AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators. We acknowledge that air travel has a negative impact on our environment, so we work together with Cool Earth to offset carbon and protect our important rainforests.
