Description of Deep South Delta Blues tour in America

Enjoy a self-guided odyssey through the Deep South, and a taste of genuine Southern hospitality, as you explore the unique cultural landscape and often sobering history that crafted America’s musical legacy.

You’ll learn the leading figures behind the American Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta and Birmingham, their stories and tragedies. You’ll travel back to a refined, romantic era with a memorable riverboat dinner cruise along Old Man Mississippi in New Orleans. And you’ll compare the lavish lifestyles of the inhabitants with the hardships of their slaves at well-preserved plantations.

Just a few of the many highlights on this tour include the elegant French Quarter and Garden District of New Orleans, and visits to Elvis Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo and his mansion, Graceland. You can stop at the crossroads where the legendary Blues guitarist Robert Johnson is said to have made his infamous deal with the devil, or the Sun Studio in Memphis, through whose doors many of the greatest names in music have walked.

Naturally, no effort to trace America’s musical heritage could ignore Nashville, the heart and soul of Country, where you might catch a show at a traditional honky-tonk, or even join in a spot of line dancing.

Alongside several included excursions, such as Graceland and the dinner cruise, your self-guided itinerary could also feature the Gibson guitar factory in Memphis, Nashville’s Grand Ole Oprey House, or the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. You might wander historic districts around Natchez that were immortalised by Mark Twain, catch live jazz in a bustling Bourbon Street hangout, or wander filming locations from ‘The Walking Dead’ in Atlanta – no doubt about it, this Deep South road-trip will have your feet tapping.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Deep South Delta Blues tour in America

We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both the places and communities we visit as well as our travellers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect.

We have created a 'Travellers' Code of Conduct' to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour.

This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails, staying in official campgrounds and disposing of all waste responsibly and recycling whatever we can.

We are proud supporters of Bay Area Wilderness Training (www.bawt.org) a charity based in Oakland California which works to connect disadvantaged children in the local urban area with the great outdoors. Their work helps to provide these young people with life changing experiences which they can
apply to everyday life. Everyone booking with Grand American Adventures has the option to donate £1/$1/€1 to support this well-deserved charity and we will match this donation.

Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity providers. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit.

Visit the Civil Rights Institute and Museum in Birmingham highlighting the struggles for racial equality in the 1960s. You also visit Preservation Hall in New Orleans – established 50 years ago for the purpose of giving regular work to local musicians and protecting authentic and traditional New Orleans jazz from disappearing.

Visit Clarksdale, considered the birthplace of Blues music – where we visit Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club. This was opened to build on and further the musical heritage intended to bring visitors and business back to the town.
