Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon holiday

We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both the places and communities we visit as well as our travellers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect.

We have created a 'Travellers' Code of Conduct' to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour.

This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails, staying in official campgrounds and disposing of all waste responsibly and recycling whatever we can.

We are proud supporters of Bay Area Wilderness Training (www.bawt.org) a charity based in Oakland California which works to connect disadvantaged children in the local urban area with the great outdoors. Their work helps to provide these young people with life changing experiences which they can
apply to everyday life. Everyone booking with Grand American Adventures has the option to donate £1/$1/€1 to support this well-deserved charity and we will match this donation.

Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity providers. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit.

It is also important that we help to protect the fragile desert environment. The desert’s natural way to avoid sand erosion is by creating cryptobiotic soil which creates a living crust on the desert floor. This special soil helps the desert to protect itself from wind and rain erosion and promotes plant growth. All our tour leaders encourage our travellers to stick to the path to avoid damaging this special soil which can be hard to see.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Zion & Bryce Canyons were new to me and quite spectacular, esp with a light covering of snow on the peaks and in some gullies. The trip allowed plenty of
time for hiking / walking and also for taking photographs which was really great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get fit so that you can enjoy the walking. The treks down into Bryce & Grand Canyons as well as the walks in Zion Canyon involve quite a lot of climbing at
altitude - not hard climbing at all but definitely climbing which needs a minimum level of fitness to really enjoy. Also take your camera and have spare batteries & SD cards. The scenery is fabulous.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The trip used a local Indian guide in Monument Valley and our guide Ron always advised us which trading posts (souvenir shops) benefited the local people.
As we were doing a lot of walking and minimal driving, the trip did minimise environmental impacts where possible.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The trip itself is excellent, giving a reasonable amount of time in each place to see something of it and appreciate It's beauty. I think an extra day could be
added very easily, to take in Antelope Canyon as you pass so close to it and people say it is also very beautiful.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I loved walking the canyon river in Zion National Park but my most memorable thing was a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. It was excellent! I'd never been in a helicopter and this flight has convinced me that this is a fantastic way to get close to big places. It was an extra on the tour but definitely worth it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This holiday is focused on a very beautiful environment. The scenery is splendid.
Be in healthy physical condition so you can go out and enjoy it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The tour company was focused on all of the above. They encouraged us to go out into the community. As far as environmental impact and conservation went, the care of the canyons is everywhere and they encouraged us to take notice.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Good tour. Well planned and organised. Excellent itinerary with a good
balance between travel time and time at the location. Great guide, knowledgeable. Tour group was relaxed enough for people to go on their own or stay in small groups. It was great from start to end.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Lots of lovely places and "interesting" weather - walking down the Grand Canyon at dawn in the rain, the lightning acting as a backdrop to the Navajo evening in Monument Valley, almost getting up to Angel's Landing at Zion NP.... lots of lovely memories and great photos.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take an open mind, be prepared for small changes to your itinerary and keep in touch with your guide.
Be sociable.
Be ready for any weather.
Take the optional trips.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, tipping presumably supported local people/industries, and lots of recycling opportunities everywhere.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, great bunch of fellow travellers (tour was full at 13).
Our tour guide, Dan, was great and made the holiday work really. He was always available to us and coped well with our different needs/wants and the unpredictable weather.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

First view of Bryce Canyon; trekking down to Cedar Ridge in the Grand Canyon.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Have good hiking boots and take your walking poles.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

These tours are not cheap and I hope a considerable amount of what we pay goes to the local businesses that are used e.g hotels, local tour guides. These tours tend to attract people who appreciate the need for conservation and therefore try to reduce their environmental impact e.g obeying national park rules, not leaving any litter.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great itinerary enhanced by a very experienced tour leader who used his knowledge to maximise our opportunities e.g. visit to Horseshoe Bend Overview. Had great picnics which greatly reduced extra expenditure. Hotels/lodges very good quality. Shame about the bus: very cramped and uncomfortable especially on long journeys (last day 7 hours).

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Hiking through Bryce Canyon with snow capping the rocks. One group member said as we hiked down amongst the structures "We need to invent new superlatives". It was stunning.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

While there are disadvantages in travelling through the Canyons in winter - cold, ice on paths, weather the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages - few people, sight of snow capped canyons, and if the weather is clear the views are superb.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

As much as it can in the USA - recommend travellers bring own keep-cup as even accommodation uses disposable cups and glasses. Tour uses local Navajo tour in Monument Valley which was wonderful.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic, recommended. Great tour guide from this tour operator.
