Responsible tourism: South Africa self drive holiday, Northern experience

When booking this holiday you can be certain that you are on a tour where the most comprehensive responsible tourism guidelines are followed in order to guarantee that your trip benefits the destination. In your travel documents you will find information on how to neutralize your carbon offset through a local certification scheme. We go the extra mile by calculating your kilometers you drive so neutralizing your offset becomes even easier. We always encourage you to offset your CO2 emissions locally via Food & Trees For Africa. But don’t worry, we did our part too, as we have neutralized our carbon offset via a local certification scheme for our office operations.
Where possible we have made use of suppliers with a Fair Trade Tourism and / or Heritage SA certification. These accommodations have shown their dedication to their staff and the local communities and environment surrounding them.
A bonus to the environment is that by staying more than one night at the same accommodation you reduce your footprint as easy as one, two, three.

On this tour we work with local operators for our meet & greets, transfers, excursions and accommodation.

One of our preferred suppliers in this itinerary is Fair Trade Tourism certified Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge. The lodge supports the following community projects and is very committed to benefitting the people whose land and resources have been used for the purpose of tourism:
• Madi a Thavha School fund
• Supporting artists and crafters
• Tswelopele crèche in Indermark
• Vele school at Gogogo
• Vhutsilo Mountain school near Siloam hospital

At the lodge they like to share their involvement in these projects with their guests and offer them the opportunity to visit the initiatives. Guests can visit the children of their staff at their houses or their relatives in Tshioswi by car or mountain bike and the children will show their living environment and village. Various artists and crafters can be visited and they can show their homesteads and workshops. Tswelopele crèche, Vele School and Vhutsilo Mountain School are very interesting projects to visit on the various tour programmes. Teachers, learners or volunteers show you around and give information about the work they are doing with children in various age groups. Clients are welcome to support a project in kind or by donations. You can discuss their needs with the staff of the projects during your visit or with the Madi a Thavha staff.
By using accommodation like Madi a Thava we can assure you as a traveler that when booking this tour you are making a direct positive impact on local South Africa.

1 Reviews of South Africa self drive holiday, Northern experience

5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed on 18 Aug 2009 by

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were many moments, but if i had to choose it was whilst driving through Kruger Park a group of five elephants crossed the road, we stopped the car and waited for them to pass. The last elephant before crossing altogether raised its trunk at us as a sign of thank you for letting them cross. It was fantastic.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Well you have to be adventurous, there is a lot of driving to do to see the various attractions since some are at quite a distance but the scenery and landscapes are breathtaking.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Well I cannot really say as we drove quite a lot to get to see places and therefore we used the car extensively. With regards to locals well we used various types of accommodation and guides that one can say locals benefited directly, but then there are other locals the poor who do not benefit from such a tour.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent and good value for money gives a small glimpse of South Africa’s environment and socio-cultural-economic conditions.
