Responsible tourism: South Africa wildlife & culture holiday

Where possible we try to use properties that are Fair Trade Tourism Accredited. Using properties with this accreditation gives the travellers the assurance that their holiday benefits local communities and economies, and that the business is operated in a ethically, a socially and environmentally responsible manner. We have also thought about how we can positively impact the environment. We do this by; for example, promoting two nights stay at the same accommodation in certain places and so reducing your carbon offset for travelling further. We also make use of parks where conservation fees have to be paid. These conservation fees contribute towards the development, maintenance and protection of the nature reserves, every little contribution helps and every little contribution makes a difference.
Our office carbon offset has been neutralized via the Ocean Blue, Planet Green program and our travelers will be advised on how they can so the same in order to offset their emissions.

On this tour we work with local operators for our meet & greets, transfers, excursions and accommodation. Most accommodations are involved in the empowerment of their communities, have received a Fair Trade Tourism and / or Heritage SA certification. These certifications showcase the commitment towards a more sustainable tourism industry.

One of these companies is Khayelitsha Travel. Khayelitsha is the name of an area on the outskirts of Cape Town. The name Khayelitsha means “New Home” and is situated a mere 30 kilometers from Cape Town. Khayelitsha Travel was funded with the support and mentorship of our non-profit organization. Making dreams reality by showcasing our travelers a half day in the footsteps of a local. You can see how they live and how they go about their day to day chores.

By using companies like Khayelitsha Travel we can assure you as a traveler that when booking this tour you are making a direct positive impact on the people you meet.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This was a fantastic holiday. It was well thought through, beginning in Cape Town with wine tasting and a Township Tour and ending 16 days later with a full day in Kruger Park. There was also a lot of variety between these two points. The B&B's were well chosen and those in private game reserves were unusual and interesting, for example the luxury tents at Buffelsdrift, the thatched bee hives in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and the rock-like pods in Kwa Madwala. We really appreciated the various opportunities to go on safaris and we had great fun riding an Ostrich in Oudtshoorn.
Seeing so many wild animals in their natural habitat was probably the best part of this experience and there were many opportunities to do this. We also enjoyed driving ourselves for most of the time so we could go at our own pace, but it was also excellent to have a driver for our day at Kruger. It would be difficult to know how to improve this holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We travelled in late February/early March and some days were very hot, other days were pleasant. The middle of summer could possibly be too hot for some people. Remember to have some cash for tips - at petrol stations, B&B staff, guides etc. We bought some internet access time for our computer which also gave us GPS. On a few occasions the GPS was very helpful although not necessarily essential.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would rate this very highly. It was well priced and well organised. Our tour operator even came to meet us when we were staying in Cape Town which was a very nice touch.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Probably driving through Imfolozi Game reserve in our own vehicle (always having been in a game drive jeep before) and coming across the amazing animals and realising that a few seconds before or after and we wouldn't have seen a thing.
Staying in a tree house with our own outdoor shower.
Sitting on an ostrich.
Riding an elephant at Buffelsdrift.
Seeing whales jumping in the sea from the shore.
The list goes on - it was just that sort of holiday!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

South Africa was more than we had hoped. So beautiful. Lovely people. Great food. Easy driving. Although we thought we might have given ourselves too much travelling to do it was fine - and felt very relaxed.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In part. We obviously supported local business and restaurants etc. and visited wildlife rehab/conservation projects. Unfortunately most of the guest houses we stayed in seemed to be owned by ex-pats from other countries but they were all staffed with locals and some invested in local schemes for conservation or education. And the tour agent promotes excursions that invest in local social initiatives which are great experiences in their own right.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely fantastic. Our agent was helpful and patient in creating our itinerary and rang us during our holiday to check we were happy and was able to help with a hire car misunderstanding and sort it out straight away. Splendid service.

We are happy you enjoyed your holiday! Thank you very much for your feedback on your
experience and it enables us to improve our programs. We will notably look into offering
more accommodations that are not run by ex-pats, but by local residents.

We hope to see you again in our beautiful South Africa!
