Alternative family winter holiday in Sameons, France
Description of Alternative family winter holiday in Sameons, France
Imagine a Family Ski Festival, a community of up to 13 lovely families staying in a charming outdoor centre situated in a quiet hamlet minutes away from the Heritage Village of Samoens. 270kms of slopes are 7 minutes walk away. It is all inclusive right down to all your meals, lift passes, daily yoga and guided adventures. Tempting, no?
Beyond the skiing, this trip is very much about connection with nature and our community. The children, and adults, make best of friends and there is always someone you can ski, snowboard, or make igloos with! There are daily Yoga classes and unique nature connecting activities run by a local Nature and Mountain guide that are well beyond the normal scope of a ski holiday. This trip gives you a sense of the majesty of nature and takes you on journeys to a Wonder of France to discover ice falls, beaver hunting by the river, marshmallows round open fires and hide and seek in the forest under the moonlight.
This trip is exceptional value especially for those who will make use of the whole Grand Massif lift area. Ski lessons are extra and you would pay for those directly to the ski school. We make coherent suggestions and link you with others in the group who are the same standard. Morning lessons are 9.15-11.45 and run from Sunday to Thursday or Friday.
You just have to get to the Alps, and we recommend driving or car sharing. It’s a 10 hour drive from London and it costs approx. £450 if you take the Eurotunnel. The train is also an option and Geneva Airport is only an hour away.
Each family has their own spacious en suite room. Most rooms have a double bed and a bunk. There are always kitchen facilities available; either in the ensuite rooms themselves or in the chalet. The dining hall is 5 minutes walk and you can choose to have all your meals catered (you make up your own picnic for lunch at breakfast time) or you can self cater your breakfast and lunch and deduct (£75pp).
NOTE: This holiday is unfortunately not suitable for most wheelchair users, as there are stairs that cannot be avoided.
Ski or snowboard hire is from the Outdoor Centre and includes quality gear.
We have our own cosy dining area within the Outdoor Centre where we will share dinners and stories. It is possible to buy beer and wine with meals. There is a games room downstairs so after dinner the children can wonder down for a game of ping pong or baby foot and practice their french. We also have a private chill out games/ cinema room where we have our yoga lessons in the morning.
Great friends are made on this trip – kids and adults alike. Over half the families come back year after year.
Kids’ ages range from 0 to 18 on this trip, although we recommend it most for children from 6 to 18. There are many single parent families and a big mix of complete beginners and expert skiers all of who are very well catered for on this trip.
Please note: this trip only runs Saturday to Saturday - 2 consecutive weeks over the UK February Half Term.
Book early as it sells out every year.

PlanetOur company has sustainable travel at its heart. We were one of the first companies to offer sustainable holidays in the Alps.
On this trip we are staying in a 'Green' Outdoor Centre. This concept of 'Centre De Vacances Verte' is little known outside of France. 'Green Vacation Centres' offer French schools and adults access to and an appreciation of the Great Outdoors. They offer Nature Discovery weeks and try to give people new Outdoor experiences. Our Outdoor Centre is run by a local family.
February is a busy time in the Alps, but we try to minimise our impact by staying in a simple Outdoor Centre that is very aware of its carbon footprint, that sources much of its food locally, that recycles and is generally very aware of having the least possible impact on nature.
We often have guests who are strong ecological activists and work in areas of sustainability. We moved our trip from New Year to Feb Half Term so that the snow conditions are more reliable and have never had no snow, but it is a possibility and if it it did happen, we would organise hiking and biking and other activities and tours for our guests. We work with a local mountain guide and learn about the local flora and fauna as we learn about the impact of the changing climate and tourism on the valley.
We encourage our guests to travel to the Alps in the most sustainable way possible and selected an Outdoor Centre within driving distance of the UK. Train access is also an option. Our Outdoor Centre is in walking distance to the slopes.
We do not see carbon off setting as a valid excuse to burn Co2.
La Source offers a generous monthly donation to Tree Sisters who plant trees and manages some of the most impactful rainforest projects around the world. Also the Eco Village Network who teach and promote sustainable lifestyles and communities around the world.
PeopleWell this trip is entirely supported by locals, from our accommodation to our chefs, to the ski instructors and guides. This small community who we have got to know well over the 15 years we have visited this valley, love us bringing them our lovely guests and welcome us with open arms. They appreciate our philosophy of working as much as possible in harmony with nature.
We will work with the lovely local ski school and hire our equipment locally. The Outdoor Centre will provide us with meals and they source as much as possible locally and organically.
We partner with Respect the Mountain a charity that promotes conscious travel in the mountains. We ask and expect our guests to act with deep Respect not only for the environment but for the local community, and for our own community. We draw our community from alternative schools around Europe - schools that promote environmental awareness and an appreciation of nature and the seasons, and of course Responsible Travel.
