Volunteering with elephants in Thailand

Here in Chiang Mai, our main focus is Elephants. Specifically Elephants that have been re integrated into their natural environments after previously being put to work in the Thailand Tourism industry.

We work with a partner organization, called Huay Pakkoot Elephant Community Foundation, who’s 2 main focuses are the health and well being of the Elephants and to assist the community by providing locals with jobs. All of our projects are strictly hands off which means that we don’t actually have any direct contact with the elephants unless medically necessary. So you’ll find yourself doing a lot of hikes to view and learn about the elephants while they roam the countryside of Chiang Mai.

Another amazing aspect of our Chiang Mai base is the water situation. The only water available comes directly from the mountains. In order for the local communities to successfully run certain businesses, clean water is necessary. We have also partnered with an organization, called the Raintree Foundation, and together we assist with the responsible management of water. We have built water tanks, created filtration systems and employed, educated and trained locals to maintain the water.

People

We have a huge presence in Chiang Mai and we try to help as much of the community as possible. Though our projects directly impact the community we also try and assist in other ways. Not only have we brought in locals to work with the elephants and educate the participants who join us. There are also some amazing people in the community with some other great skills. A good example is the locals' natural medicinal knowledge. Over the years, the locals have learnt what natural remedies can be used from the forests and country to safely cure different injuries and illnesses. Once or twice a week we will have someone join us to educate us on the do and don’ts of natural remedies. Participants may even find themselves in a local homestay chatting to and learning from the locals.

We also purchase as much as we can from the local community. There are and will always be certain supplies that we will need to travel into town for but a lot of food is produced in the local community and we buy as much as we can from them. You’ll find that the locals are also very crafty, they make some amazing bamboo ornaments that can be purchased and make for great gifts to give loved ones on your return home.
