Responsible tourism: Hiking with huskies holiday in Finland

Environment

During this tour we mostly move with the most ecological way there is: walking. Hiking with a husky = huskytekking.

We have our huskies attached to us all the time, so they are never running free and disturbing the wildlife, like birds.

Our guide knows very well the wildlife, the culture and history of the area, and is always willing to tell the guests about these things to give them a deeper understanding of what they see.

We leave no trash in the nature and we use no disposable dishes. We prefer having our water bottles filled with local good quality tab water instead of buing bottled water.

With food we concentrate on environmental, ethical and heath issues. We use locally produced food as much as possible. We are not big meat eaters, thriving mostly with plant-based diet. Occasionally we eat game meat and fish and can also serve those for the guests. However we are happy to serve vegetarian and vegan diet. During the Autumn tours we even have the possibility to collect berries and mushrooms with our guests and cook some delicious fresh food using those.

We take extra good care of our huskies, we only organize tours which the huskies are happy to make, and we would never force our dogs joining the tour if they are not willing to. Most of our dogs are bred for working dogs, but we also rehome some rescue dogs to whom we feel we are able to give a meaningful life and loving home.

Community

With nature tourism we want to bring extra value for our old forests and wildlife. Forest industry and mining are big sources of income in the area, but we are campaining to save old forests and native wildlife. Unfortunately most thigs are valued in money nowadays, and Finnish state has big difficulties to keep these remote areas lively. By bringing people here for nature holidays helps not only to bring income for locals, but also helps to save the recreational values of our nature.

Guests get to taste locally produced food, fresh fish, vegetables, berries, mushrooms, game meat, and special traditional breads during their stay. All these come from local producers or some, like berries and mushrooms, if not collected ourselves, from locals who can earn some extra money collecting those for us.

We highly respect our area and the people with whom we share this. We inform the locals and land owners about our tours, we ask for permissions if we are hiking close to the homes or cabins, and we inform them about our tours to come.

Our area is still very remote, we do not meet very many people during the tours, but the ones we might meet are usually very friendly. They are interested in meeting new people. It is a nice old tradition in our area to invite everybody you might meet in the wilderness to share your fire place with him and to serve him a cupful of fresh made strong coffee. We are keeping this tradition alive.

Aki and Suvi were very welcoming and couldn't make us feel more at home! The dogs are all amazing, so friendly and the personalities all so unique and lovely! Everything from the location, to the walks and food was perfect and we would really love to go every year. We found it very relaxing and a home from home for the whole time.

Yes, the money is going direct to the hosts who use local foods, services and ingredients - even picking berries and mushrooms direct from around the area
and then providing that as part of the meals.

Amazing experience, we fell in love with the place, dogs and just how well we were welcomed into the home.

Great, a real escape from it all and a back to basics experience with great hosts and a fantastic way to get to experience the real Finland.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The scenery was fantastic - pristine pine forests dotted with lakes but the most enjoyable part was getting to know our guide, Aki, and of course the dogs! We each had a dog on a harness that pulled us along - power assisted hiking! Our launch spot was lovely, as were the pancakes we cooked and ate with wild berries (blueberries) from the forest. We loved our day out with the dogs almost as much as they did!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It's really very easy to hike with huskies, you just need some half decent walking shoes. Next time we'll return in the winter and go out husky sledding. They have a 21km trail that we'd like to do..

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, tourism is increasingly important to help protect livelihoods and keep the younger people, like Aki, in work. We left no trace of our visit, the area is pristine and we'd played our part to ensure it stays that way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We'd never heard of husky trekking before, but now we are raving about it - so much easier and more fun than normal trekking!
