Description of Hiking with huskies holiday in Finland

This tailor made week away in the wilds of Finland is ideal for those who love the thought of hiking through taiga and esker forests and past vast lakes and mires accompanied by a four-legged best friend.

Being introduced to your very own – for a week – husky companion is just the start of the adventure with a knowledgeable local human guide also providing insight and enjoyment away from the modern world.

If you’ve never been hiking with huskies before then the experience is best described as a form of propulsion or similar to having a gentle guiding hand giving you an extra push. It can be tough but the rewards always outweigh the exertion. You’ll be fitted with your own shock-absorbing harness, around the waist, so as to lessen the impact of your eager hiking buddy. Who is taking who for a walk? Has never been a more notable utterance.

The choice of husky farm accommodation or the comfortable surrounds of a lakeside hotel offer an ideal blend of outdoor action and cosy retreat with untold health and well-being benefits associated with a week of exploring in the Finnish wilderness.

As the farm is home to 25 dogs you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get to know your hiking companions better with a mix of Siberian and Alaskan huskies alongside Greenland and rescue dogs ensuring an exciting and, sometimes, noisy experience.

Nearest neighbours are a couple of kilometres away however, you’ll never be lonely with the friendly and hospitable husky farm owner who's on hand to provide a really informative, safe and enjoyable escape for nature lovers.

Facilities at the husky farm maybe basic but they also offer everything you need including a traditional outdoor Finnish sauna guaranteed to create a warm welcome no matter what the weather.

We recommend travellers are fit and healthy before signing up for this six day tailor made tour. Huskies really love to make the most of each and every moment when they’re exploring in the wilderness. This enthusiasm encourages human hikers to do the same which helps to create an intensive form of outdoor exercise that’s more physical than standard hill walking but also more immersive.

All dietary requirements can be catered for if you let us know in advance and please be aware that the itinerary below can change at any time although the spirit of a husky hiking adventure will always remain the same.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Hiking with huskies holiday in Finland

Environment

During this tour we mostly move with the most ecological way there is: walking. Hiking with a husky = huskytekking.

We have our huskies attached to us all the time, so they are never running free and disturbing the wildlife, like birds.

Our guide knows very well the wildlife, the culture and history of the area, and is always willing to tell the guests about these things to give them a deeper understanding of what they see.

We leave no trash in the nature and we use no disposable dishes. We prefer having our water bottles filled with local good quality tab water instead of buing bottled water.

With food we concentrate on environmental, ethical and heath issues. We use locally produced food as much as possible. We are not big meat eaters, thriving mostly with plant-based diet. Occasionally we eat game meat and fish and can also serve those for the guests. However we are happy to serve vegetarian and vegan diet. During the Autumn tours we even have the possibility to collect berries and mushrooms with our guests and cook some delicious fresh food using those.

We take extra good care of our huskies, we only organize tours which the huskies are happy to make, and we would never force our dogs joining the tour if they are not willing to. Most of our dogs are bred for working dogs, but we also rehome some rescue dogs to whom we feel we are able to give a meaningful life and loving home.

Community

With nature tourism we want to bring extra value for our old forests and wildlife. Forest industry and mining are big sources of income in the area, but we are campaining to save old forests and native wildlife. Unfortunately most thigs are valued in money nowadays, and Finnish state has big difficulties to keep these remote areas lively. By bringing people here for nature holidays helps not only to bring income for locals, but also helps to save the recreational values of our nature.

Guests get to taste locally produced food, fresh fish, vegetables, berries, mushrooms, game meat, and special traditional breads during their stay. All these come from local producers or some, like berries and mushrooms, if not collected ourselves, from locals who can earn some extra money collecting those for us.

We highly respect our area and the people with whom we share this. We inform the locals and land owners about our tours, we ask for permissions if we are hiking close to the homes or cabins, and we inform them about our tours to come.

Our area is still very remote, we do not meet very many people during the tours, but the ones we might meet are usually very friendly. They are interested in meeting new people. It is a nice old tradition in our area to invite everybody you might meet in the wilderness to share your fire place with him and to serve him a cupful of fresh made strong coffee. We are keeping this tradition alive.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Peace and tranquility. Beautiful forests and still lakes. Wonderful, well cared for and friendly huskies. Superb sauna down by the lake. Just say the overall
experience- a great de-stressing holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Once you are picked up from the airport, everything is provided. A good breakfast, a home cooked evening meal and a packed lunch for the treks. You will be well looked after and will not need to spend anything!
And depending on the time of year, take the insect repellent. But dont let this put you off!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

This holiday certainly benefits Aki and his partner. They in turn care for the local environment- picking up any trail litter left by other less considerent hikers

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A wonderful time. So relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommended.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Everything was perfect! The dogs, the way they were cared for, Aki and Suvi who looked after us, the location. The whole holiday was brilliant. And of course the countryside - endless lakes and pine forests. The cabin we stayed in was right on a lake and the views and peace & quiet were breath-taking.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Walking with huskies is quite hard on the upper legs (I found), so get into shape before you go. In particular if you are not a big person as the dogs are strong and you walk in a good pace.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Aki and Suvi were very in touch with their surroundings, environmentally aware, used local produce wherever and visitors bring extra income to the area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10 out of 10. For me everything was perfect. If you like dogs, hiking, local food and a wonderfully quiet and peaceful location, this is for you!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Hiking with huskies with hosts Avi and Suvi was wonderful. Visiting the taiga in Finland was very special, and Aki and Suvi were the nicest and friendliest hosts I have ever met. The cabin was relaxing, especially the Finnish sauna and the lake. I was there in the summer and the 24 hour daylight was a treat.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I wish I would have stayed at Aki and Suvi’s place the entire time I was in Kuhmo. I stayed a few nights in hotel Kalevala, which was fine, but I liked the
cabin on the husky farm better. I did a few activities before going to the husky farm such as one night in a bear hide, and a canoe trip. I think these could have been done from the husky farm rather than the hotel.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Supporting the husky farm was a pleasure. Aki will accept huskies that other places will no longer keep bc they are not good sledding dogs. This is not his attitude, he feels that if the dogs get along and they like it at his farm, then they can stay regardless of their ability. I loved hiking with lady gray.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I highly recommend this trip!

Aki and Suvi were very welcoming and couldn't make us feel more at home! The dogs are all amazing, so friendly and the personalities all so unique and lovely! Everything from the location, to the walks and food was perfect and we would really love to go every year. We found it very relaxing and a home from home for the whole time.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Switch off your phones and enjoy the freedom and relaxation of being there!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the money is going direct to the hosts who use local foods, services and ingredients - even picking berries and mushrooms direct from around the area
and then providing that as part of the meals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Amazing experience, we fell in love with the place, dogs and just how well we were welcomed into the home.

In an area with high unemployment it brought in money which has to be a bonus but didn't really see much of civilisation.

Great, a real escape from it all and a back to basics experience with great hosts and a fantastic way to get to experience the real Finland.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The scenery was fantastic - pristine pine forests dotted with lakes but the most enjoyable part was getting to know our guide, Aki, and of course the dogs! We each had a dog on a harness that pulled us along - power assisted hiking! Our launch spot was lovely, as were the pancakes we cooked and ate with wild berries (blueberries) from the forest. We loved our day out with the dogs almost as much as they did!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It's really very easy to hike with huskies, you just need some half decent walking shoes. Next time we'll return in the winter and go out husky sledding. They have a 21km trail that we'd like to do..

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, tourism is increasingly important to help protect livelihoods and keep the younger people, like Aki, in work. We left no trace of our visit, the area is pristine and we'd played our part to ensure it stays that way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We'd never heard of husky trekking before, but now we are raving about it - so much easier and more fun than normal trekking!
