Things to do in Andalucia

Our top activities in Andalucia

Walking the far south

Walking in Spain’s southernmost region combines exotic landscapes and romantic culture with superb food and a warm Andalucian welcome. Stay in friendly fincas along the way – many guesthouses produce their own organic olive oil, wine or fruit; food is fresh and has travelled metres rather than miles.

Las Alpujarras boasts the imposing backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. There are lakes fed by mountain streams, lush valleys, roman ruins and tiny pueblos. Stay in a whitewashed village in Almeria, shopping at the local market and trekking the surreal landscape of the Sierra de los Filabres. Come in spring for wildflower carpets and bird watching. Nearby, the coastal desert of Cabo de Gata has several walking trails through the Nijar National Park, beloved of botanists and photographers.

Trail notes make self-guided holidays easy, and many routes start from the front door of your guesthouse – driving is not essential. If you do hire a car, however, you can also enjoy a day at the beach – or at the Alhambra Palace.

Get creative

Year-round sunshine – ideal in winter when much of Europe is gloomy – makes Andalucia perfect for painters and photographers, even without its stunning diversity of inspirational subjects. Nature offers Spain's highest peaks, rustling pine and oak woods, and deserted beaches backed by Roman ruins or desert vistas. Come March-May for spectacular wild blossom. Come any time for vibrant human life, from dazzling white villages, Moorish palace, fiestas and colourful markets.

Activity holidays

Alongside photography and painting, Andalucia offers activity breaks as different as whale-watching and yoga – though both those lift your inner spirits. The narrow Straits of Gibraltar funnel a constant stream of cetaceans between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, including sperm whales – join whale and dolphin watching trips with responsible tourist operators from Tarifa, or try your luck with binoculars from coastal headlands.

Try a mountain retreat combining yoga with meditation, delicious vegetarian food and hill walks. Foodies can combine walking with a cookery break featuring foraging forays along with cookery sessions led by a chef from London's acclaimed Moro restaurant. Or go horseriding in the stunning Sierra Nevada National Park, where rugged valleys are home to nimble mountain goats, wildcats and over 60 bird species, including golden eagle, griffin vulture, golden oriole and hoopoe.

Buen apetito!

Food here blends an ancient Roman troika of olive oil, wine and wheat with a corresponding lip-smacking Moorish trio of saffron, coriander and rice. Peasant influences shine in dishes like quail in gazpacho and hearty empedraillo (white bean stew).
Superb Iberico ham has a wonderful fishy counterpoint in mojama (air-cured tuna). Add delicious sheep and goats cheese, boquerón (anchovy), amazing shellfish – washed down with varied sherries like fino, manzanilla and oloroso.
