Family adventure in the Dominican Republic

Family adventure holidays in the Dominican Republic

Travelling in the DR with kids

The Dominican Republic’s Caribbean location and tropical climate feel like the first adventure for families travelling here, but that’s only the start. The DR is establishing itself as a centre for adventure holidays. The north coast has the best of surf and turf, with white sand beaches and warm seas set up for all kinds of watersports plus mountains and forests where the adventure sports go from easy going to full on adrenaline. The Dominican people offer a genuinely warm welcome to visitors of all ages and while much of the DR is hot and steamy during the summer school hols, July and August are wonderful in the north.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES

Go beyond your comfort zone

Adventurous teens can try all kinds of challenging activities in the DR that will push them well beyond their comfort zone. Canyoning, for example, requires rappelling, cliff jumping and manoeuvering through a waterfall canyon. Or try river stand up paddle boarding, which combines the skills of surfing, kayaking and white water rafting.

Celebrate the sea

The Dominican Republic is famous for its lovely beaches, but they aren’t just for sunbathing. Sheltered bays, calm seas and warm water are heaven for little kids, but older children can snorkel, swim or learn to surf. There is wind and kite surfing, too, and you can learn to scuba dive here, too.

Make a splash inland

Family friendly watersports aren’t confined to the coast in the DR. It’s the only nation in the Caribbean where you can white water raft; there are natural lagoons you can cliff jump into or zip line over; cave lakes to dip in; waterfall cascading; river kayaking and tube rides to try… Bring a swimsuit, or three.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HOLIDAY TIPS FOR FAMILIES

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL ASKS THE EXPERTS

Matt McArthur, founder of Adventuresque, shares his tips on why the Dominican Republic is a great place for a family adventure holiday.

Why the DR is a great family adventure

“There are so many great adventures around the north coast without needing to travel far. Dominicans are warm, friendly people who enjoy hosting guests on their island. We run a weeklong, family adventure holiday that stays in two different locations, one beachfront and the second next to a spring-fed river on a Permaculture farm, so there’s a really nice mix that children enjoy. This kind of adventure holiday is ideal for children eight years and older.”

Stepping outside your comfort zone

“When you take risks in a controlled environment, like with adventure travel, you arm yourself with dealing with unexpected changes when life forces them upon you. Taking risks and challenging yourself on your own terms conditions your brain. Learning to live outside your comfort zone better prepares you for life!”

Tips on what to drink

“Natural fruit juices are a local favourite. Try zapote [a small fruit with a fig like flavour], mango, sandía [watermelon], carambola [starfruit] and tamarind, all made fresh and served ice cold.”
