Fitness holidays in Wales

For a UK-based fitness holiday you would struggle to find a more appealing destination, or one that offers so much promise, as Wales’s Pembrokeshire National Park. This is the only coastal national park in Britain; a wild and windy slice of paradise where guillemots nest on rocky cliffs, grey seals bask with their pups in sandy coves, and during the summer months the nutrient-rich waters draw crowds of dolphins, porpoises and whales.

Stay in a five-star activity centre just a short walk from the beach, dine on hearty home cooked meals, and jump into a thrilling activity program led by fully qualified and experienced guides. If you want a fitness holiday that will put some pink in your cheeks, clear out the mental cobwebs and exercise muscles you’d forgotten, or maybe never realised you even had, this is it.
You can stay for a week, or just a weekend; even a few days in this sublimely peaceful location with its brisk Atlantic air will have a fully reinvigorating effect. The activities are designed for people that already enjoy a reasonable level of fitness and want to make the most of it. Programmes are designed with enough flexibility so that if, for example, you want to skip horse riding one afternoon in favour of a self-guided hike along the coast, or a yoga session, you just need to let them know. And after a day getting wet and wild, nothing beats the feeling of soothing your tired muscles with a hot shower and then enjoying a few beers around the wood-burning stove with your fellow adventurers.

What will I be doing?

There is an enormous and very enticing range of activities here for fitness lovers. One of the biggest attractions is the potential for coasteering. Protected by wetsuit and helmet you will scramble over rocks, leap from rocky ledges, swim through swirling waves and mysterious sea caves with the changing conditions ensuring that no two routes are ever the same. If you’ve never tried coasteering before, it’s about the most fun you can have outdoors, and the exertion involved with regular plunges into the cold sea is fantastic for fitness.

You might also spend an afternoon sea kayaking along the Pembrokeshire coastline, honing your skills and gaining a great workout for the upper body. This wilderness really is a sea kayaker’s paradise, with seals in the waves, and deserted beaches, sea caves and rocky nooks to discover.
Surfing is also available off the Blue Flag beaches here, providing a full-body workout but especially for your core. Even if you’ve never done it before, by the end of a second lesson your professional surf instructors should have you standing up, if only for a few seconds. You can also try kite boarding – a mix of snowboarding, windsurfing, skateboarding and sailing, another activity that gives your upper body extra suppleness - and give your legs some exercise with a number of picturesque coastal hikes.

When to go

The beauty of this kind of holiday is that it can be done all year-round. Visit in winter for the most challenging surf conditions; between March and July for the finest scenery including vast blankets of bluebells, and from July to September for your best chance of spotting wildlife such as whales and dolphins, and Atlantic grey seals with their pups.
“The whole trip was great, for me as a professional working long hours in the city I loved how easy it was to book and then get away for some fresh air and exercise without having to worry about it. Oh and for every food requirement I heard mentioned (nut free, gluten free, lactose free, vegan...) they seemed to have a solution!” – Alicia Crisp in her Wales fitness holiday review
